RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017
The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.
To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.
I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.
I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.
I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.
I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.
Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.
Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

Emotional abuse, teen self harm, depression - new book
Hi everyone,
Many of you know the eqi.org site. We have been supporters of School Survival for quite some time now. And Soul Riser has also been very supportive of us.
I want to let you know that we have helped write a new book called "Letters from the Unloved - The hidden world of teen depression".
The book contains real letters I have received over the years which help show the connection between abuse, especially emotional and verbal abuse, and self harm, etc.
You can read more about it here....
http://www.eqi.org/lettersbook.htm
We'd like to try to get the book into school libraries and counseling offices, so if you could email us with the school counselor's email address for example, we will send them a pdf so they can look at it. Or if you would be willing to show someone in your school that would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Steve

Hi there
That book really is very awesome, although depressing to read.
I will make this an announcement for a while so that more people see it.

Re: Emotional abuse, teen self harm, depression - new book
Seems like a pretty good book, just makes me sad reading some of the letters. I think the main problem is that these people don't realize they have the power to get these abusive people out of their lives - make things better.

Very depressing... very true... but also inspiring to know that there are people out there who understand and care enough to make a book about it...

Re: Emotional abuse, teen self harm, depression - new book
Really pisses me off. I have some friends whose parents talk to them in the ways some kids describe in this book... makes me think that some people should be sterilized.
Sad thing is those parents probably are so fucked up themselves they don't see the harm they do. It's just a sad cycle, unless someone can help those who've been crippled by it.

Carla Franklin may be a whore. She may be a wonderful, kind, moral woman. Seeing as I don't know her personally, I cannot know for sure. However, I find her actions (suing Google, requesting the personal info of her critics, getting angry over random internet idiocy that she should ignore and be bigger than, trying to get this site in trouble because of a few users' commentary on the situation, etc.) pretty ridiculous and unwarranted. If she didn't want people to to be talking about/judging her, well 1. that's impossible, she's a human, and 2. she shouldn't have been a model or agreed to be on film. AND 3. she DEFINITELY shouldn't have sued Google and made all this fuss over a few random idiots whom she probably won't ever know expressing their opinion. Mmkay? MMKAY.

RE: Emotional abuse, teen self harm, depression - new book
This section is for comments, discussion and feedback on our new book, Letters from the Unloved - The Hidden World of Teen Depression
This is a book that I (Steve) and one of our volunteers put together. It is a collection of letters from teens and adults who have emotionally abusive parents. We hope that it will help raise awareness of the cause and effect relationship between parents and self-harm, depression and suicide.
For a limited time we have a PDF copy of the book on this link

Emotional abuse, teen self harm, depression - new book
Looks like a neat read. Not entirely my taste though so I think I'll pass. I think that the best way of getting the info out there is by mixing it with a little humor. People tend to listen a bit more when you make them laugh. Heck, it's working for Cracked.com, why not us?
