RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Re: Learning to program, HALP!

Do you have visual basic?

There should be some tutorials with it.

I haven't programmed in basic for a long time, but I can try to help.

Re: Learning to program, HALP!

Yeah, Visual Basic is a program. It includes a development environment (a text editor & window editor for designing your program), and a compiler that turns your code into a real program.

Microsoft has a free "express" version available for download at http://www.microsoft.com/Express/VB/

There's also a 90-day trial of the professional version if you need that for some reason, but the express version should be decent.

Re: Learning to program, HALP!

Does thou know HTML already?

That's the first step, since most languages are derived from HTML. Schools have a reason for teaching you it. [other than it's super simple]

Re: Learning to program, HALP!

Well..HTML isn't really much. That's why people don't use it. It'll be basic and simple any way you do it.

Learn it > http://www.w3schools.com/Html/
And which covers many other languages including Visual Basic > http://www.w3schools.com/sitemap/sitemap_tutorials.asp

They now have a Try it yourself button..which is new since the last time I visited, I find it very helpful..

DOS and old versions of windows came with a command-line BASIC program. You can still get BASIC compilers like that... they aren't visual though, they ouput and input text from the console. Doesn't hurt to learn that way, either.

Re: Learning to program, HALP!

it really depends on what you want to make for you programming on what you should get, if you want to make 3D games or applications I would HIGHLY recommend Dark Basic, its a modification of visual basic that specializes in 3D. making objects is a siple as typing "make object cube" and moving them is as simple as "move object up" or even "set movement to arrow keys"
the only thing it lack is a good and effective collision system, but one guy made a every good collision, physics, and gravity pulgin that works great. I made 3 complete good games (and thousands of ones i abandoned, i quit programming because it was consuming my life)

Go with Dark Basic i can help you every step of the way. and they have the most helpfull and nices community i have ever met, you just ask for help and they give it to you. (because they have no life and nothing better to do... but SHHHH! dont tell them i said that!)

I can even post some images of the good games I made. they are shitty but dont expect to be cranking out Unreal engine quality games without a 300 person team and no life. just does not happen.

Re: Learning to program, HALP!

there are thousands of languages available such as C++, but the best ones, especial for beginners are the basics. Drak Basic, Visual Basic, Blix basic, are all examples of these. you can definitely make money programming, but as a beginner the best way is to join contests, where creativity is more important than the graphics, such as arcade game contests. you can also release anything for free and tell advertisement people that you can put their advertisements in it. but its a long road, don't expect to be cranking out money right off the bat. Programming also led me to other, and very much more profitable hobbies such as digital art and 3D modeling. I myself made some profits selling some of my 3D models cheap on turbo squid and such. programing also looks really good on any resume regardless of the language. means you have alot of dedication and hunger for knowledge.

Re: Learning to program, HALP!

Yeah there are lots of programming (and scripting) languages... Java, C, C++, ActionScript (used in Flash), LISP, Perl, PHP, Python, etc. etc.

And yeah, programmers can make a lot of money.

hahaha no i did not make them in dark basic but it would not be the hardest thing to do, Ive seen tons of 3D modeling programs made with DB. its easy to use, animate, and move 3d models though.

Re: Learning to program, HALP!

If you want to get in "serious" programming", such as game programming or more complicated things, C++ is a good language, after you get through the basics, a good start up book is "C++ without fear" by Brian Overland. C++ is one of the most widely-used languages for programming games, and it's cross-platform.
