RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Looks like it will be a pretty sexy system.

However, your motherboard supports DDR3 1333 RAM, and you have chosen some DDR2 800.

I'd comment if i understood computers at all.

You're going to need a 64 bit OS if you want to use 8GB of RAM.

I realized this right before you posted, I upgraded it to a 64-bit

I hate it when people do this. The fact that Linux distros are obscure and uncommon doesn't make it any better than other operating systems.

Looks sexy. But two things..

1. You could probably find a better monitor if you looked around a bit more..and uh...
2. Your motherboard's deactivated..

I'm not saying that's why. I've used Linux (can't remember what distro) before, and it is superior to XP, except on something such as gaming, which is why it isn't suited to Amort's needs.

The only reason why Linux isn't on the computer I use is because it's not my computer, it's my family's.

Re: My future computer rig (and some extras)

My parents don't wanna pay me anything, I'm still waiting for my dad to open me an account to see if I can make some money with google adsense. The laptop he gave me SUCKS, it even lags with Halo 1.

Hope you enjoy it Cool

And, I'd reccommend you get a quad-core AMD Phenom. Just as good as a Core Quad, for less price. My brother has a triple-core, with an ATI 4850 he plays Far Cry 2 in DX10 and AA with no prob...

That does suck, I ordered mine yesterday though Biggrin

Google adsense?
Is that the thing where you can make $5000 a month through google?

Re: My future computer rig (and some extras)

Yeah, but you need a lot of blogs or web pages, and the payee must be 18+.
The motherboard you're getting is still fucking awesome, and I think a Core 2 would do perfectly in all games.

NO.

Pros:
1. Sometimes it's more stable.
2. It's more customizable...
3. XFS and EXT2/3/4 (AKA linux filesystems) DON'T need defragging.
4. $0.
5. Bash rules. And win-bash/cygwin/etc isn't just the same.
6. Almost no viruses. Much harder to infect than Windows.
7. Runs on almost anything. I mean anything.

Cons:
1. Nerd operating system. If you're one of those who don't even know how to use a GUI right and don't give a damn about computers, Linux is NOT for you.
2. Many windowze games don't work.
3. There's just too many choices: dektops, distributions....
4. Sometimes a pain in the ass to maintain and/or upgrade.

Yeah, in order to keep the price down, i downgraded the mobo to a 750i
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6813188026

I might get the 780i or another GTX 260 core 216 for christmas Smile

I like ATI more...
And if the mb has "video artifacting" it must be the built-in vid. card (if it has one), you could just disable it and use the GTX.

If you ask me, I recommend getting a motherboard that supports DDR5 1000000 to the power of 7 RAM. I mean, sure, it costs billions of Yen, but the SPEED! Its like your computer is an F1 car with rockets on the back and a warp-capable engine.
