RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Re: The War on Kids

Well, just finished it. It was excellent in my opinion. I tad bit long at about 1 hour and 35 minutes, but excellent. I only wish they had spent a little bit more time on academics, but everything that was needed to be said was said. It covers all subjects from schools resembling prisons, to ADHD, to Homework, to D.A.R.E.

Re: The War on Kids

cant say I blame you, most of my music I download for free, and then pay when I think It deserves it. Still, make sure you pay those people, they deserve every penny of it.

but the fact that you CAN torrent it, means its getting attention. this is going to work out for us. Hopefully that will get more people googleing "I hate school" and "school sucks" (we are at the top of the list, W00T!)

Re: The War on Kids

The reason I torrented it was because right now you have to order it via internet. Now, since I don't have a paypal account and my parents watch what comes in through the mail/I never get to it before them. And of course, my parents would never order it for me, even if I payed them the $20.

Re: The War on Kids

My parents would never let me get something like that, for fear of it brainwashing me, so I might have to torrent it and find out some way to buy it

Re: The War on Kids

There was some movement on the forums. Wok decided to create a Technical Forum for bugs and such, and took myself and Thought Criminals advice on removing the quick reply option.

But other than that, he doesn't seem to be incredibly friendly, and, well... there's very little discussion happening there. Hope it picks up a bit in the near future. I want so badly for this to SUCCEED.

Re: The War on Kids

If this doesn't get in-store status then I'll finally get off my ass and learn how to use a torrent (they confuse me to no end, my internet speed is fast enough to download the actual file, let me goddamnit), but until then I'll have to go off what everyone says. EPIC FILM, 9/10! Just because they didn't put in enough about acedemia (according to... L? I think it was L).

It's easy. Download BitTorrent, install it, go to the Pirate Bay, mininova or some other respected torrent site, download a torrent, doubleclick, set where you want the contents to be extracted then just let it do it's thing.

TIPS: If it says a torrent has a high number of "seeders" or "leeches", this is a good thing, because you know lots of other people have downloaded it, and it's safe and legit. Best thing is, it'll go faster if it has more seeders and stuff. I'm not going to go into the exact details, but if you've unzipped a torrent 100 percent and it says SEEDING instead of DOWNLOADING, then you know it's seeding. To keep seeding just leave it there for as long as you see fit, forever if you want! If you pause, stop or delete the torrent from the interface, it'll stop seeding.

If you have Firefox, try downloading WebOfTrust. It's a collaborative addon thing that shows if websites are trustworthy or not. If it's good it usually displays a green circle next to the link, or on your interface, If it's bad, it'll be red and a warning will pop up if you go to the site. You can click on the circle to see the various ratings for it, including trustworthiness and child safety, Click again to be taken to WOT.com's page on that site. This is good because there are a number of torrent sites that are filled with viruses and shit, and you can almost always safely avoid them with this tool. Good antivirus is a must too.

Be aware of the dangers presented by pirating: While i've pirated loads of crap and never been caught, I never can know when they might find out. You shouldn't worry about being caught by the RIAA. Just try and lay low. We all have reasons for pirating. Mine is because i'm too damn poor to go out and buy all kinds of games.

With this advice, i'm sure you can use BitTorrent like a pro in no time. If you have a question just reply in this thread.
