RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Doing things like normal teenagers.

Normal? Normal people are weird. Why would you want to be like them?

Actually, have you ever met a normal person in your whole life? No two people are exactly alike, right? So actually "normal" people are just suppressing their individuality so that they can "fit in" with other people who suppress their individuality. That's probably the only real thing they all have in common. The only reason it's considered "normal" is because most people do it. Because most people are afraid of being true to themselves.

Why do you WANT to fit in with people like that?

I'll admit, I wanted to be "normal" for quite some time as well. But then when I finally got accepted into the sort of "normal" crowd of people, I realized it was incredibly boring... because all they ever did was talk about shallow superficial things that make my braincells die just thinking about it.

Look, if you WANT to stay in school, then by all means do it. But don't do it just because you're afraid of being true to yourself. That's not a good reason.

Re: Confused

This is kind of late but, yeah, I'd rather be myself. I wouldn't want to be someone I'm not just to be accepted or to fit in a group of kids. If they don't like you just because you are not like them, then just don't talk to them and ignore them..

There is no "normal people" or "different people", there's only you.

Re: Confused

Yeah, but at times I do want to be "normal," even though I despise small talk like nothing else. When people tell you that you're "different from anyone else they know," that's not necessarily a good thing.

Go to work. Send your kids to school. Follow fashion. Act normal. Walk on the pavement. Watch TV. Save for your old age. Obey the law. Repeat after me: "I am free."

Re: Confused

Well, it all comes down to the person, if they don't care about what other people think, then they'll keep being who they are. If they think they should change, then so be it, it's their choice, maybe it'll be a good thing to change, maybe it won't, you never know what might happen. They could change into the real them, as if the person they were before wasn't the real them, it's hard to tell.

All men who have achieved great things have been great dreamers.
