RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

"You're on the computer too much"

That's what my mom keeps telling me

Yes, i'm on for a while everyday, part of it is because I just got a computer, received it in piece and put it together myself, my first build.

How long? Sometimes the entire day sometimes less than 3 hours, it varies depending on what there is to do. My mom says i'm on too much and I should do other things, I know this, and I'm outside every now and then and I'm pretty damn skinny.

I have no reason to do anything else, she pressures me to than sitting on my butt all day, she wants me to play board games with my sister (sitting on my butt), read a book (sitting on my butt), watch a movie or TV (sitting on my butt).

My question is, why does she want me to do all of these other thing that revolve around the same actions? I can read on the computer, I can watch movies on the computer, and I can read stuff on the computer. Why can't she just let me enjoy my life instead of taking away one of my only sources of relief from stress?

I even have these special computer glasses that protect my eyes from the damage the screen can do to them (yes i'm that much of a geek, and I look fucking awesome in them)

I'm most comfortable and relaxed when i'm sitting at my computer. just tip-tapping away time and life the way I want to spend it. She always says "You will not become a hermit" (WTF?) and "Get some exercise" (I play soccer 3/4 of the year). I don't understand.

So I ask, why do you think she is saying this? And what can I tell her to let me enjoy my life the way i want to?

Re: "You're on the computer too much"

My family makes random jokes about this topic towards me. I go on the computer a lot because it has the internet, a world without walls.

Sometimes its so much more interesting than real life like the boxxy civil war, the issue surprisingly had a lot behind it. Lots of interesting things happen on the internet. We are able to communicate to people from different countries even by voice. We are able to gain access to underground information. We are able to share views and information, create communities and forums to bring people together of different political views, hobbies, interests and sub-cultures. We are able to say things without being shy, we can ask and receive answers. We can download and play online games and have fun.

Ask her why she's so afraid of you being on the computer a lot... and why she thinks watching TV is any better than being on the computer.

She's not making sense. It'd be interesting to find out if she makes sense to herself or not.

Re: "You're on the computer too much"

I've dealt with the same stuff. Mom never wanted me 'talking' to people online. Thus, she became concerned when I would spend most of my time on internet forums. The truth is, I hated "Social" things and prefered to be by myself. I enjoyed playing video games and doing stuff on the computer. The social groups that were available to me sucked (mostly overtly religious groups who only wanted to guilt teens into doing charity work). Mom knew this, but insisted I keep trying. Looking at this now, it's more dangerous to meet people face to face than chatting through forums. She must have bought into that slippery slope bull shit.

Why does she not want you on the computer as much? My guess, is it's not something she grew up with, so she doesn't understand it. Mom confesses this to me all the time. If I had a dollar for everytime I heard "When I was a kid, we didn't have (insert new technology)", I would be a millionaire. They don't see online reading, games, and movies as the same, even if it is more interesting. It's ridiculous, but it's the way they think.

Yea, my parents say that a lot to. They think that the minute you post a reply on a blog or a forum somewhere anyone in the world can find out your name, address, social security number, etc...

They also say things like "come down and watch TV!" Really? I learn more on the computer than by TV.

Re: "You're on the computer too much"

There are arguments for spending less time on a computer, getting out and doing things, for sure. Go for a walk, take photos, go to a museum or a party or a concert or a job, etc.

But saying you should watch TV instead of using the computer? :o

You can watch much of what's on TV online, anyway. And do something else at the same time.

What's really messed up is not giving solid reasons for saying things like "you're on the computer too much" and not having a realistic discussion about it.

Well, i'm horrible at arguing in real-time, I need time to think about stuff before I argue back, which is why I suck at debating, because whenever I pause for a minute (my average thinking time) they think they have won and walk off with a big grin on their face

I had that same problem. So whenever I needed to explain something to someone, I'd write it down and make 'em read it when I'm not around so that they're more likely to read the whole thing before they say anything.

I think I'll nominate this for crappiest advice of the year.

1. Doesn't solve anything. It just hurts the mother who, though mislead, is likely loving, and it seems like she's trying to help. It just creates more tension and hurts communication.

2. Would you want your kid to grow up to be like Bill Gates? Not to mention being on the computer doesn't necessarily make better at programming.

As others have said, communication is the key. I can't be any more helpful than that, but I do hope things will work out for you.

I agree. I do go outside. I do sometimes go for a drive. And I do play golf multiple times a week. I just rather read a magazine or go on a computer than watch 99 percent of the programming on TV.

Has it occurred to you that the error may be on your side? With the lack of things like tone of voice on the Internet, sarcasm might not be clear. Because, no matter how closely I study your post, I can not find the slightest hint of sarcasm. It might be that my sarcasm metre is flawed, but it also doesn't hurt to consider that your post might not have been written clearly enough.

Furthermore, I do not believe a sarcastic reply was exactly constructive in this case. Amortisatie was looking for advice. You did not provide that, but nor was your post funny to entertain. I see no contribution of your post to this topic-just insults hurled at others in your second post. That just hurts people, creating a shitty community atmosphere.

Sarcastic or not, I find both of your posts to be completely worthless. I am usually a tact person, and I really do apologise if this hurts you more than I intended, but I no one appreciates being called bitchwhoreslutskank.

Re: "You're on the computer too much"

My parents make up horror stories of what will happen if I spend too much time on the computer, among the less insane are:

'You'll have to wear glasses for the rest of your life' (I already wear glasses, but not ALL the time, but both my parents, and both my sets of grandparents all wear permanent glasses. Go figure.)

'You'll get carpal tunnel'

'You'll get fat'

And also they try to guilt-trip me into spending less time on the computer, saying that I neglect them and shit. Hypocrites.

The only exception to this is if you have a seizure, but then again, that's triggered by epilepsy (i.e. rapidly-changing flashing lights) NOT PTSD. Remembering a bad incident is NOT the same thing as having a flashback. When you remember, you think; when you flashback, you feel.

WORDS OF MYSTICALNESS

TA is trying to cover up for the fact he's a complete twat by blaming it on sarcasm. He meant that as serious advice.

Re: "You're on the computer too much"

If you would kindly remove yourself from the gene pool in the most painful way possible, then.

Carla Franklin has never denied that on the afternoon of the third of August 2006 she raped and killed sixteen children celebrating their friend's fifth birthday and forced their parents to share a dinner of their remains.

If a teacher you don't know tries to bust you for something, just tell them "Jsem výměnný student, nemluvím anglicky. Tak jdi do prdele ty posranej hajzle, tvoje matka je kurva!", then send me money.
