RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Re: "You're on the computer too much"

Alright, I'll edit this post and tell you what I think.

Edit:

Anyway, my parents do this too. It's because they don't think that what you do on the internet has anything to do with gaining knowledge in the same way you do when you read a book, play a board game, etc. But really, you can play chess online for example and read so much more than you have access to in real life. And learn things that you can't without a computer such as HTML.

Tell her you consider using the computer to be a very productive thing. You don't really have to argue/debate this with your mom. Just explain what some of the things you do online are and how they're the equivalent to many of the things she considers "better".

No problem. Sorry about my other post, it's because it really annoys me when people just can't let things go you know?

Re: "You're on the computer too much"

I didn't want to start a huge argument and I apologise for that. I wouldn't call one post "not being able to let go", and I feel that insults warrant some sort of reply, but it derailed the topic, which isn't good either way.

Back on topic: My mum used to say that a lot. She still says it a lot. But what's helped me is just... get off the computer. Sure, it's complying. It shouldn't be done always-sometimes you're doing something really fun/productive, in which case you should cling to that key board like a tick. But other times, it's nice to get up, walk around, do something different.

Another thing that's kinda helped is proving to my mom that I am productive on the computer. Somehow, mom was always reluctant to stop me from playing chess and like activities. I don't know whether this will work with your parents, but perhaps finding one "productive" (in their terms) activity will get them off your back even when you're doing... other things.

But still-when parents nag, it's annoying. The use of flawed arguments (for example, those you have cited in your post) really makes my blood boil. And just like you, I find myself powerless in this situation. So, for lack of any better action, all I can do is give a hug Hug I hope things work out.

Now, about that cookie...

Don't take life so seriously, it isn't permanent.

I'll make a whole batch for ya, Chiko~chan. Smile

Carla Franklin has never denied that on the afternoon of the third of August 2006 she raped and killed sixteen children celebrating their friend's fifth birthday and forced their parents to share a dinner of their remains.

The sarcasm in ta's post was pretty obvious, and mystery's posts are at least more entertaining than yours.

You sure about the sarcasm? TA's fail advice and his lame pretending to be a surgeon/doctor/laywer seem real to me.

Oy, fine, but leaving some advice for me would be nice, she is getting even worse about the computer, even though I go outside every day now

Re: "You're on the computer too much"

Amortisatie Wrote:That's what my mom keeps telling me

Yes, i'm on for a while everyday, part of it is because I just got a computer, received it in piece and put it together myself, my first build.

How long? Sometimes the entire day sometimes less than 3 hours, it varies depending on what there is to do. My mom says i'm on too much and I should do other things, I know this, and I'm outside every now and then and I'm pretty damn skinny.

I have no reason to do anything else, she pressures me to than sitting on my butt all day, she wants me to play board games with my sister (sitting on my butt), read a book (sitting on my butt), watch a movie or TV (sitting on my butt).

My question is, why does she want me to do all of these other thing that revolve around the same actions? I can read on the computer, I can watch movies on the computer, and I can read stuff on the computer. Why can't she just let me enjoy my life instead of taking away one of my only sources of relief from stress?

I even have these special computer glasses that protect my eyes from the damage the screen can do to them (yes i'm that much of a geek, and I look fucking awesome in them)

I'm most comfortable and relaxed when i'm sitting at my computer. just tip-tapping away time and life the way I want to spend it. She always says "You will not become a hermit" (WTF?) and "Get some exercise" (I play soccer 3/4 of the year). I don't understand.

So I ask, why do you think she is saying this? And what can I tell her to let me enjoy my life the way i want to?
Can't you just tell her that?
Mine does the same thing, but I just lock my bedroom door, she first banged on it, I told her to go away, and she eventually stopped... however not all parents are the same.
