RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

What disability do you have and what advantages do you have?

It could be any sort of disability ranging from mental problem to sensory problems and there could be more advantages over normal people with these disability. I"m curious how each disability improves skills in other areas. My other question related to this is that how does this affect you at school as well.

My disabilities are HoH otherwise known as hard of hearing and I also have Myopia. The advantages of being hard of hearing in severe level is having more focus on coordination, motion, sense of spatial area are better than an average person, we could observe and understand more in the visual area than the average person. Myopia allows me to focus on huge amount of details on the closeup views which helps me on certain artwork.

I'm dyspraxic, meaning I have extremely poor short-term memory, have no spacial awareness, and cannot compute sequences very well.

There aren't many advantages.

Re: What disability do you have and what advantages do you have?

I think we already disscussed mine but...

Im colorblind. I can tell my art teachers that (if i like them) and i get an instant A. dont know why. likewise, I can have an art teacher i hate and wait till I fail the class, and on the last day tell them "Im color blind you ass hole!" and walk off. talk about guilt trip. Its one of the few disablities that really does not have much of an impact on you life. I can get a scholarship for it. I can make out camouflage objects better. I can fill in the "disabled" section on my standardized test, and they curve my grade if they are too lasy to ask me. (not sure about this one) MAYBE get handicapped parking spots even though i don't need them (don't bring morality shit on me, There are always too many empty handicapped spots). when I tell people they get really interested and ask me a bunch of annoying questions (and i dont mind because im an attention whore). I also think all the gingers have green hair and I find it really funny. dont know why. I have not had to do several assignments because they involve coloring. and for some reason girls love it. like, they just dig colorblind people. or maybe its just how damn sexy I am...

All and all i love being colorblind.

Jesusaurisrex Wrote:Its one of the few disablities that really does not have much of an impact on you life.

People that aren't born colorblind and love doing coloring artworks while having manipulative color vision genes such as myself might get severely affected from it. Those who have achromatopsia may have photo phobia which may lose their life span. I recently went into an roller coaster and I have to keep manipulating my color vision on certain times so that I can fix most part of it since it already affected my optic nerve and cerebral cortex, but the damage is slight so there could be rooms for it. There is already evidence that optic nerve and brain have the capability to recover as long as they don't use technology that damages it. Look up the evidence if you're skeptic about it. My color vision seem to be recovering

One question, do you have difficulty distinguishing blue and yellow or seeing green. I'm basically almost colorblind at night, but I can see the light sources as normal color. I could tell camouflage from the object easier than I do in day only by seeing it shape and colors help on that as well. But then again, the fact that I can see colors easier than my mother and my brother at nights prove me wrong about my own night vision. This experience seem to verify for me that certain colorblindness do indeed can improve the ability to distinguish camouflauge object from the rest.

Re: What disability do you have and what advantages do you have?

Uh. Hm. I'm myopic.

And some fat fuck doctor got me kicked out of the Navy, saying I'm passive-aggressive and avoidant, using his funny quack shrink tools.

Like the MMPI-2.

It's a load of bullshit, I tell you.

I would get him for making up shit about me and he'd never know it was me, but I'm not good enough.

I spend so much time fucking around with computers that I touch-type averaging somewhere in the neighbourhood of 120 WPM and can land a tech support job without any certs or prior work experience. Not sure if that's a disability or advantage. Wink

I have trouble giving a shit sometimes.

As for Jack, doesn't it get you annoyed to see how certain condition affects you in a way that the minority might not behave?

@The Avenger: Asperger is an condition that may help onto the visual areas as well and their senses are somewhat affected. How do you feel compared to an normal person.

As for Hanny, describe her looks before I might request to get pics.

Im not very motivated to do things. And sometimes even with passion I find that it turns out bad, Like my drawing or writing. Which un-motivates me more.
Im good at arguing, Which I think could be handy In life. Im also pretty clam about things and Im good with grasping and contemplating philosophy despite the fact that I sometimes have a hard time grasping day to day ideas or finding things.

Had to move on. Account is dead.

Very realistic to the point where I only see the negatives and don't consider the positives as they are very low.

advantages: Keeps me from getting my hopes dashed, helps me make back up plans on the fly and it gives me a certain independance mentally.

Disadvantages: doesn't leave much room for hope and I tend to be a bit cynical.

nothing wrong with a word, but i can see where it would offend you. still, tons of people are mean to me about being colorblind, but I don't care. One person even brang in a picture, like the colorblind test wheels. he obviously did not print it out right, either that or he grabbed the wrong one. but i could read it, it said "fuck colorblind people"

I just laughed and called him a dick, and a retard for printing it out wrong.
