RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Re: What is in your school bag normally?

I keep my backpack incase I need like some markers or shit in my locker through the whole year. And then I just take my trusty binder full of paper, homework, pencils. That stuff.

Had to move on. Account is dead.

Unfortunately we don't have lockers so we have to carry all our stuff around with us.

Oh and if I'm not wearing my coat it is in my bag also.

My bag weighs a ton! I have my pencil case and about 20 school books. And on some days I have to carry my PE bag as well.

Re: What is in your school bag normally?

*the one folder & assignment notebook I always take home....and carry to every class
*whatever books & notes I may need for homework. I have a binder for each of my classes - usually wouldn't, but with the IB curriculum it pays to keep organized - so instead of hauling three or four with me every night I just take out the notes I need from each one during classes & put 'em in my folder. Oh yeah, that took plenty-o'-brains. Wink Rolleyes
*my reading book of-the-week for during my study blocks & ELO
*bottle of water for the 2-mile walk home
*cell phone (until after school, at least)
*some pocket change (ICE)
*In one of the side pockets I always have a pack of 3'x5' lined note cards. No idea why really, but there they sit. Shrug

That's basically it....don't usually take my iPod out of the house, and even if I did I do not think that I would bring it to school with me. We have that 'no-electronics' policy & the risk of my favorite music-playing device being taken away is too high.

-3 Reading books
-Organizer with paper and other worksheets they give me
-Ipod
-Small pen that I can make shoot out ink, like an octopus, but that's for self-defence (and if I can find it again)
-A piece of paper that has all the times my classes end, (not when they being Biggrin )

We aren't allowed to have bookbags because of "the safety of our staff and student body" [gun and bombs] Nor are purses allowed to be any bigger than the size of paper..so we have to carry everything..

What's next? They would restrict the people to be naked since clothes are still big enough to hide things and technology was good enough to produce an tiny dangerous object that can be used as weapon.

Right now nothing, as school hasn't started yet (it will soon No ) I'm starting to think it might stay like that for the whole school year. I really don't give a damn anymore.

How do you manage that? You can't go to school outside your city right? Then how do you go school. I thought that was important to the School Board.

There are counties and you can go to any school they have, even if it isn't within the same city you live in. I know that teachers have to live within the city in order to teach at such-and-such school, but students can go to any place in the area & surrounding. But yes....it is pretty stupid on the school's side nonetheless.

Re: What is in your school bag normally?

By the end of last year I had:

text books
random crumpled papers
notebooks filled with a few pages of notes and drawings the rest (The boredom of school somehow gives me the uncontrollable urge to draw)
ripped in half folders
broken pencils
keys
assorted crap (paper clips, note cards, wrappers, change)

I felt so free when I was able to dump it all out, now I have to carry it all around for months... I'm not looking forward to this.

I carry my PE kit (fuck you physical education) seperatly due to the fact my bag is advertised as "big and spacious" and I thought I could fit loads of stuff in there. In reality it's fucking tiny and the zip might as well be made from cardboard.
