RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017
The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.
If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.
To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.
I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.
I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.
I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.
I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.
Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.
Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.
-SoulRiser

Internet Citizens Against Retarded English (ICARE)
If you are anything like me, you cannot stand people who just don't seem to care about things in general. Since, on the Internet, text is (normally) all you've got to express yourself, it makes a lot of sense to care about the way you type. Unfortunately, at the time of writing, extremely few people do.
ICARE is a "secret club" for those of us who still "care" in general. There is no membership fee and there is no need to sign up for anything. After reading this page, you simply decide mentally whether or not you want to "be in". That's it! (Most likely, you will not have to do much, if anything, differently if you agree.)
If you care, you agree to the following:
* Always use as correct grammar, spelling and punctuation as your current knowledge allows you to, even in real-time chat sessions, no matter who you are talking to, regardless of any "peer pressure".
* Constantly strive to learn more and never settle for "good enough".
* If there is a spell-checker available, use it. If not, at least try to enable/install one.
* Unless it will get you in trouble, try to correct people who are abusing English as often as possible.
If enough people start caring, the Internet may become usable again.
So why should you care? The real question, at least in a sane world, would be more like this: "Why should you not care?" Have you ever felt the satisfaction of doing something right? Knowing that you are pushing yourself to the limit of your capabilities? It's quite addictive, and once you start typing properly, you will soon see it as something completely natural and become unable to go back to writing sloppily without actively trying!
Feel more than free to spread the address to this page. It will be updated with a link to a basic English language guide later (when it has been written). In the mean time, check out "English 101".

Are you a fucking moron (You are.)?
All that this is about is using proper spelling and grammar to the best of your abilities, and correcting people who type like they're randomly hitting the keyboard while wearing boxing gloves.

Fix'd.
I would, but my grammar in general is not too good, and i make too many typos. But i think i've improved since i joined.

Other than including real-time chat, I agree with this. However, since its inception, IRC and earlier chat protocols have not used proper grammar and spelling, as such things take time that is not good to use in full-speed sessions. I'd also make an exception for text messages, as full words are harder to type and read.

I'm in. Maybe I'll school the kids at my school and my brother some proper grammar/spelling... But texts are excluded, right?

Re: Internet Citizens Against Retarded English (ICARE)
The beautiful thing about language is that it morphs constantly. Otherwise, we'd be speaking Proto-Indo-European still. Now, that isn't to say that attempting to enforce a minimum of intelligibility of language is a bad idea. Without everyone using a similar method of communication, it devolves into chaos very quickly. So a common language that we can all understand is essential. And, as we can all understand simple English (hopefully), I do believe that is what we should be using. However, I also believe in the principle of being liberal in what you accept from others and conservative in what you send. That isn't to say that you should spend unwarranted amounts of time decrypting something that somebody posted, but that you shouldn't protest when somebody uses the English language in a way that you're not used to. Now, I understand that many of us are caught in a constant unending ritual of information gathering and that being hit with a massive block of text speak or a dialect that you're unfamiliar with (see: ebonics) is like being kneecapped by a sledgehammer in the middle of a delicate ballet. Simply skip over those. Ignore them, do not flame, do not draw attention to them. If you see somebody who has made a few small spelling, grammar, or punctuation mistakes, do not go all spelling/grammar/puncuation Nazi and start exclaiming, "MY GOOD SIR, YOU ARE ABUSING THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND YOU MUST STOP POST HASTE." Don't do that, seriously. Getting confronted about small matters like that just pisses people off. People assimilate into the community they join naturally and as such adopt many of the mannerisms of that group. If you give people time, they can and will adopt the expected writing style of the community. Calling people out constantly only slows down that process. Kindly asking them once or twice to clarify their posting a bit works wonders.

Agreed on this point, as well. It's fine if you yourself types in proper English, but confronting people on it (especially over the WWW) only encourages them because they get red in the face & more than likely will keep typing as they usually do. Just look at the trolls who have been on this forum. Even politely telling them - like some did in the beginning of the troll crusades - just issued more improper grammer & vulgarities to be furiously written-up on their keyboard.
In real life it can be different, but if you are going to correct somebody's grammar for making a minor mistake, for god's sake don't do it to them in front of other people. Of course, I myself believe that this excludes people who actually speak as if they are texting or for the 'I'm-so-random-it's-cute' factor, with plenty of 'like's, 'totally's, 'ZOMG's & etcetera. But then you don't have to correct them so much as beat them over the head with a large sti-uhm, aheh heh, what I mean to say is.... :<_<: :>_>:

AnonTalk is not very different from this site as the users their are wanting youth rights. the problem is that the sick pedophilia raep stries kinda ruin the site and the constant spamming the site owner does to rival sites is just disturbing.

Spawning place for grammar nazis
let me show you how this works-
starts out as an ok idea, people do it, spelling gets a little better, around the end of the first week, it comes into contact with ppl WHO DON"T like it, a small shitstorm breaks out. "nothing special", OH REALLY!? shitstorm ends, everyones mad, they had to spell wrong in a fit of rage, realizes it dosent matter, they quit the program.
TL;DR=Back where we started

I kinda support this but since i am a TERRIBLE speller, my grammar sucks horse penis, and i make a lot of typos and depend on spell check to get out a sentence... not so much. Im just against this "OMG U R A FAG LOL GTFO CAUSE IMA BETER THAN U!!!!" kinda talk. I know some dyslexics... in fact he said he would join this forum... so try not to be total ass holes about this. then again you are against RETARDED english so i guess its not so bad. but for shit like typos and bad grammer... just ignore it guys.
