RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

my teacher is telling me what not to read

my silent sustained reading teacher (more like prison guard) was telling me what I can't read on my own time. Here is our conversation.

Bitch: "is that bag of bones? why are you reading that? That is totally inappropriate for someone your age!"
Me: (politely) "I'm 16, I think I could decide for myself what to read. There's nothing inappropriate here anyways."
Bitch:"what about the LANGUAGE?"
Me: (losing my patience)" swears are just words used to describe extreme emotion. kids use them all the time. There's nothing in this book I haven't heard in person."
Bitch: "children SWEAR?" Bigeek
Me: all the time. Now if you don't mind, I'll just get back to reading."
Bitch: what about the sexual content? That is completely inappropriate to your fragile mind"
Me: (pissed) My mind is not fragile. I think only I can know what I can't handle. And sex is the creation of pleasure and life. What's inappropriate about that?'
Bitch:"the way it's presented!"
Me: "did you even read this book?"
Her:"I don't have to! Now give it here!"
After arguing for a while, she walked over to me and ripped the book from my hands. She's also going to call my parents talking to them about how "concerned" she was over the content I'm reading. And I don't think I'll see my book anymore.

Well, don't treat your parents like they're already your enemies in this situation, unless you know for a fact they are. If you can explain it to them first, they'll probably take your side, not hers. Unless your parents are like your teacher, in which case you're fucked.

Re: my teacher is telling me what not to read

Press charges for theft. Considering a reading book Is allowed material. Did you bring it from home? If so you could totally get your parents on her ass make her give it back and apologize. And pay If she damaged the book. What a bitch.

Had to move on. Account is dead.

Re: my teacher is telling me what not to read

If someone took a book off me because it had inappopriate, I don't give a damn how much it would break the misconception of me being some good little teacher's pet, I'd break their arm and say I'll charge them with theft, abuse and discrimination if they try to press legal charges.

Re: my teacher is telling me what not to read

yeah, I brought it from home. And my parents are on my side. I tried talking to the principal (can you believe it) but he just said that if it was inappropriate, then it was a perfectly justified confiscation. But he said I could get it back as long as my parents come get it. Mad

Banned in which way? They don't have it in the library or they won't allow you to read it?

Re: my teacher is telling me what not to read

Good fucking god... the nerve of some people is just amazing. I have never run into this problem at my school but it dose make me wonder.. I think I'm going to buy some controversial books and see how the school reacts. It's fun to play with them sometimes just for the hell of it. Anyone got some well known ones?

School is not communist.

School doesn't treat anyone equally.

"I heard a joke once. Man goes to doctor says "I'm terribly depressed". Doctor says "I know just what you should do. Poliacci the clown is in town, go see him, you'll be cheered right up." The man bursts into tears. "But Doctor, I am Poliacci." Funny joke. Roll on snare drum. Everyone laugh."

Re: my teacher is telling me what not to read

If I could get my hands on a Playboy magazine I would definitely bring it into school to test the fuckers. A good argument might be 'it's in my own time and isn't it better that I release sexual urges this way than in other, more violent ways?'

lol that would be cool. maybe a hustler or some anima that has nude drawing in it.

life is just blah blah blah. we hope for blah, and sometimes we find it. but mostly its blah. and waiting for blah. and hoping you were right about the blahs you made. and when you think you just got the whole blah damn thing figured out, and your surrounded by the ones you blah. death shows up and blah blah blah.

No they fell apart a while ago. They were vintage mags when I got them. One of them had the classic cover

Because porn can do for us what no one else can do on a daily basis; always be convenient, flexible, AND arousing all at once.

And we're modern men. What do you expect? Wait, I probably shouldn't say that, because I know if we showed some of the Samurai from 1570 the porn of today, they would probably enjoy it very much, and mimic us, just with more dramatic flair. "Oda-sama wants me to march? I think not! I, Akechi Mitsuhide, shall instead conquer the Oni in my hakama!"

I got mine off amazon. I dunno if that counts as stealthy though.

Also @ crayola I would say dumbing us down was better, the handbook was more of an informative book on how to start unschooling.
