RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

Help a Fashion Noob

tl;dr I need business clothing, tell me what to wear. Also you can recommend a haircut. I realize that haircuts tend to be hard to pin down, so just tell me what to avoid so I don't look like a fag.

---

I'm going shopping for "business" type clothing. I'm going to need basically everything, however I don't know much about this. Actually, I'm 100% ignorant with this stuff, I have no idea what to do. I don't know what looks good, I don't know what to avoid, I don't know how you figure out what fits correctly etc.

Price isn't a problem here, but I don't want $200 pants or something... just nothing too ridiculous.

I need like, a semi-formal set consisting of a long sleeve shirt, slacks, belt, tie (optional), shoes, etc.

Eventually I need to buy an expensive suit, but take care of the above first.

I don't need a tuxedo.

Basically I need to make a good first impression and make an interviewer think I mean SERIOUS BUSINESS. One of the problems is that I'm young, so I have to convince someone 3 times my age I'm not "too immature" for the job or something.

I need a haircut, but I don't know what to tell my hairstylist. I might just tell her, "Pretend your interviewing me for a job, what should my hair look like?" Would that work?

I don't want to shave because I get told that I look like I'm 14 or something when I shave. Not good obviously. I don't know how to deal with facial hair though. Just tell me what looks gay or untidy, and I'll avoid that.

Ok that's about it.

Re: Help a Fashion Noob

Get like a sweater of some sort with a collared dress shirt under it (A tie is optional, but you will already be looking nice). Don't pull the collar out over the sweater's neck; that's a little too casual. Keep it tucked in. This with a pair of matching slacks and nice dress shoes will impress the employer. You may think to yourself, I look like a tool. But you will most likely impress the employer. You could also go for the three-piece suit, but that may be a little too nice for a job interview. The employer will probably tell you are trying too hard to impress.

As for the haircut, I guess anything besides messy or a mullet. I guess you could keep it long, but it's gotta look nice. Although, a short cut is probably the way to go

Re: Help a Fashion Noob

Ok for proffesional business look I advise you to invest in a Purple, Green, Red, Or Orange Dress Shirt. They Aren't commonly worn and they offer some great color matching opportunities.

This will typically cost around 20$ per shirt

Jeans: If you plan on wearing them make sure that they are a darker blue not neccesarily black though, Darker blue just generallly looks better. and will be enough for someone getting started.

(Pm me if you want advice on matching colorful jeans of the green, red and yellow variety)

Belt: Buy both a black and a white belt (Black is versatile, and White really brings certain outfits together) they also sell belts of other colors ie yellow belts for black pants, red belts for white pants purple belts for green pants.

Shoes: Just make sure you get black ones, they generally match every outfit and they'll be enough to get you started.

Example Dresss

White/ or blue Jacket
Red Dresss Shirt
Dark blue Jeans
White Belt
Black shoes

====Colors that don't match

Black and Brown is a fashion no no
Purple and Brown is yuck
Green and Blue is a no go (I would
wear purple pants with green dress shirts)
Orange and blue

------------------

Color Matchings:

Purple Matches with Green , red , white, or Yellow, black

Green matches with red, white, purple, yellow, black

Red: matches with blue, purple, green, white, yellow black

therefore in theory you could have

White jacket
green dress shirt
yellow lanyard
Red Belt
Purple Pants
black shoes

Hope this helps if you want Ill post pics.
