RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

SS, lend me your infinite wisdom

Okay, so my dad wont homeschool me because he wants me to get a diploma. Not a GED. Now, how do I counter this? sources would be nice. He says that they're very different, and not the same. He's being his usual asshat self and says "Trust me, I know what I'm talking about."

No you don't. I know more than him about this, I assure you.

I'll look things up, but asking you all can't hurt. I don't want online schooling, because whether I'm there or not, I'm still learning shit. I'd rather teach myself.

Re: SS, lend me your infinite wisdom

Homeschooling can get you a diploma.

http://school.familyeducation.com/home-s...37519.html Wrote:Do homeschoolers need a high school diploma? Sometimes. Do they need a diploma from an accredited school? According to Cafi Cohen, "The experience of thousands of families indicates that the answer is 'almost never.'"

Cohen elaborates: "Every homeschooler can have a document verifying graduation from high school because -- as the principals and administrators of small private schools -- all homeschool parents can create their own diplomas." Are these diplomas recognized? "College admissions officers rely primarily on transcripts, test scores, and letters of recommendation. Most never ask about diplomas because typical applicants, high-school seniors, do not yet have them."

What about job applications? Cohen advises parents: "Employers care mostly about experience. By granting your own diploma, your teenager can answer "yes" to the diploma question on most job applications. And, interestingly, employers never seem to phrase the question this way: 'Do you have a diploma from an accredited high school?'"
http://www.midwestvalues.org/home-school...iploma.htm Wrote:You can get the actual home school diploma in a variety of ways. You can make your own. Yes, this may seem like a strange concept, but from needle point to high quality printed diplomas, you can add any special touch you want to make it as special as your child. Another option is ordering your home school diploma from a company that helps create diplomas for public and home schools alike. And lastly you can finish your home school education from an accredited online or campus based school that will supply you with a diploma. All these options are valid, legal, and best of all, personal. I have seen all these options and have been so impressed by the imagination and beauty that a home school diploma can have.
math-and-reading-help-for-kids.org/ Wrote:Your homeschool student does not necessarily need an official high school diploma to attend college; instead, you can create an unofficial diploma and a transcript for your child. Some families ask a certified teacher to create the transcript because it gives the document more credibility. When creating a high school transcript be sure to use the correct terminology when labeling a course. Additionally, indicate if a course was AP, college, or included a lab. These are all important points of information for a college admissions counselor to know. When creating your child's transcript remember to include extracurricular activities such as any sports, clubs, or internships. Many schools give students credits for internships or program where they get credit for their job. If your child completed an internship or any other program that would qualify for credit at a public or private school then include it in your transcript. The transcript you create is your child's chance to showcase all of the knowledge and the life experience they has gained!

But you will have to check with your state. You're in the U.S., right?

Re: SS, lend me your infinite wisdom

Yes. I'm pretty sure Indiana follows those basic rules. I didn't even know about Home School Diplomas. I have a feeling my dad wont buy any of it though. HE gets a certain idea in his head, and it just doesn't go away. It's definately worth a shot though. Thanks, it helped a lot.

My dad's worried about me not getting into some top school. Both Harvard and Stanford take homeschoolers with GED's. I win Razz

Re: SS, lend me your infinite wisdom

Show him some sites. If you can't convince him then I doubt you ever will. I'm assuming he has a job. I for one would not like to have to work all day when I could ship my child to whatever messed up school while I work so we can play tennis after school.

Good luck! I can't offer much on the Diploma thing but if his only reason is you can't get one VIA homeschooling then shatter his argument and enjoy the hastily thought up excuses.

It is always funny watching it. Sadly, when we argue, he has a way of making people believe what he believes. He'd make an awesome lawyer. That or school official.

I have so much evidence now. If he doesn't believe me, I'm shunning him and he's no longer my father.

Ahaha, I make my arguments ridiculous to be ridiculous. Somehow I end up having some great arguments.

Still, does he have a job?

Yea, he's a construction worker for BP. I think the reason he's like this is because he fucked off in school, and then afterwards didn't try for college, so he blames his failure on that.

I said "I want to be homeschooled." And his argument was "Well I want a million dollars." Rolleyes

He said that I'd end up a whore if I didn't go to school. He literally said "Don't tell people I'm your father and I wont tell them where you dance at." You know what? Forget it, whether he believes me or not tomorrow.

SHUNNED.

There ya go. Razz

AHAHAHA, If he gets a million dollars can I have some?

I think your dad is pretty cool. Maybe the shunning will open his eyes a little, if not electroshock therapy is a good fallback.

Win. And no, I think I'll be stealing taking "borrowing" the money.

Naw, shunning would only make him yell. He really doesn't care if I hate him or not. He just wants to be right. He is pretty cool when he's not being an asshole.

Hmm, that "borrowed" money will somehow reach my hands right?

It seems your dad has outsmarted my attempt, now I will bring in Jedi Master Yoda to help me.

That you'll borrow from my dad. Amiright? Laugh I'd turn this into a PM, but that doesn't raise post count, now does it?

O.o

I still have Yoda! He will not with stand the powers of the Jedi mind trick! (More money lost how am I gonna get out of this one)

Besides my infinite wisdom says that Yoda has no need of material benefits.

Hopefully he'll take pity on me though. None

In reality, most graduates don't get a million dollars that quick since most do not land in a millionaire job which is extremely rare. Tell him to research that there are graduates who finds trouble finding an decent paying job in this economy and now employers rejects some graduates because they have find an news where recent graduates reject job offers. Yes there is news showing this 2-3 months ago.
