RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

For you?

O.o

Learn to use a gun for the unplanned uprising.

You could always get a ping pong table.

Anything that ever happened or will... one condition, it has to be amazing.

Re: Generic topic.

Can I try to convince you to try a sport?

I was super "anti sport" when i was a freshman. not athletic at all, I was just weak in general. I always wondered why ANYONE would ever want to excercise "for fun" and how they could be all happy the whole time they where working their asses off. It made no sense to me, sports just seemed like the most worthless thing in the world. Freshman year my parents forced me to join cross country. I was terrible, it hurt, and at the time I "thought" i loved it because it was the only thing I thought i could really do, but I was kidding myself. I hated it.

then my friend told me I should join the swim team. I fell in love with swimming. It hurt, but I fucking loved every second of it. just the calm of the pool mixed with the intense work was... mystical and enchanting. I could not stop. I kept coming back, even though I was the worst on the team. over and over again. And I loved every second of it.

before this, I was a loser. like, strait up, had no friends loser. but on the swim team I made new friends, your team sort of becomes your family. you love each other, and there is a special bond between all of you that you share. I rapidly became increasingly confident. Before swimming I could care less about my hair, I just let it grow out. with swimming I had a reason. I got a short cut and it increased my speed dramatically. BUT it also accelerated my social life. suddenly I was not so weird to everyone else, people could approach me easier, I began to carry myself in a new way. I actually had a life, it was incredible.

I began to get better. no longer was I the worst on the team, I dedicated myself and dumped my sweat and blood into that pool. soon the moved me out of the C team and put me in the Junior Varsity lane. by the end of the season, I had dropped from a 48 second 50 meter, to a 30 second 50 meter (just so you know, that is a MASSIVE improvement)

I loved it so much I went into swimming over the summer. again, I dropped an incredible amount, and I went from a 30 second to a 27 that season, and I came in 11th place in the regional championships for my 200 free, one away from making it to state.

after summer, I decided to stick with a year round team, who I am still swimming for. swimming has made my life 3000% times more better, and any sport you can find that your good at will probably help you immensely. and there are tons of sports that you could be good at that you would never imagine you would be. Just dont join football. It makes you a retard.

and if you still cant stand the idea of a sport, get a job, that way you can buy cool shit.

Re: Generic topic.

No sports, huh? I'm the same way, along with thousands of others. :\
Erm....art club? Film club? Theater club? Become an editor of your school's literary magazine or submit work to any magazine? Walk dogs for money? Clean up a park? Give peace a chaaaaance?

Loads of stuff to do, and a helluva a lot more that do not relate to school in the least.

That's great: $60 FTW. I used to pet-sit for a friend of my mother's and in one day got $45 for half an hour of work. 8D Though, that only hapened once, I still got paid pretty well at all other times, too.

((Mary mother of GOD I like to use commas.))
