RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Hello Everyone!

I'm new here. I discovered this site in one of my many bouts of depression today, and I have to say, it is one of the most important, if not the most important website out there today. If I believed in god, I would say this site is god's work. It seemed like nobody else in the world felt like me about school, but them I googled 'school is slavery' and came across this site. It was stunning how much this site spoke to me. I had the thought that minors are the slave class of today, but somehow, not even the intelligent people in my school seemed to have that thought. Then I saw the section of this site about kids' rights and I practically had an orgasm on the spot. I agree with nearly every word of this site, and the parts with which I disagree are usually small. I plan to forward this site to my father and hopefully show many other people.

I'm a 15 year old in high school right now. Thankfully, there's less than a week until summer vacation, but I got depressed today thinking about how incredible my life could be if it weren't for school, and even once summer starts, there are only 72 days of pesudo-semi-freedom, which is nowhere near enough to do all I want to do. The idea that nobody else in the world was having these seemingly obvious ideas attributed to my rapidly-declining faith in the human race, but discovering this website has helped vastly. Thank you to every like-minded soul on this website. I look forward to getting to know some of you.

Re: Hello Everyone!

Hello there Biggrin

There are many awesome people who feel the same way (some of which are recognized as professionals in society). Some of 'em are listed in the articles section, but you might wanna look up Laurie A Couture and Alfie Kohn as well. Also, www.youthrights.org is a cool site as well.

For curiosity's sake, which parts do you disagree with?

Re: Hello Everyone!

Thank you everyone, I already know I'm going to feel at home here. Smile

@ SoulRiser: The parts I disagree with are just minor details, not really important elements of the philosophy of this site. For example, this website says that today's slavery of minors is nothing compared to the slavery of blacks in early American history. I know it's not as bad, but to say it's "nothing" is a bit of a fabrication. Just small things like that, nothing worth arguing over. Also, thanks for the link, I'll have to check it out.

The key words there are "compared to"... like in comparison falling down the stairs is nothing compared to being hit by a nuke... or something like that. It isn't nothing on its own, it still hurts like hell and can break you, but it's not as bad.

Although in a sense the slavery of young people is worse because it seems so 'innocent' (ie, not as much obvious physical torture involved)... it's less obviously bad, and therefore worse because less people will take it seriously.

But then I know very little about what slavery was like for black people, so I'm not really qualified to comment either way I guess.
