To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

I'll explain in general, and if you want an explanation on a particular questions you can just ask. (But feel free to ignore the explanation if you're not interested.)

Say you have some equation, like x - 5 = 11. You want to know what x is. This one is easy enough to do mentally--if 5 less than x is 11, x must be 16. But for more complicated equations it's difficult to do that. Instead, you can change the equation so that you have x = [some expression], but you have to make sure that both sides of the equation remain equal. You can, for example add something to or subtract something from both sides of an equation, and they will still be equal. If you add 5 to each side of x - 5 = 11, you get x + 0 = 16. This is the same as x = 16, and that's what we're looking for.

Multiplying and dividing work in the same way. Take 5x = 20. It's pretty obvious this is 4, but just pretend it's not obvious. If we divide each side by 5, the equation remains true, and we get x = 4. Or x/3 = 2. Multiply each side by 3 to get x = 6.

The only sort of tricky thing is that if I do something to each side of the equation, I have to do it to the whole expression. If I have x/3 + 3 = 6, it would be untrue to say x + 3 = 18. If I wanted, I could do something like this:

3(x/3 + 3) = 6*3
x + 9 = 18
x = 18-9
x = 9

It's more common, though, to just take care of the addition and subtraction first:

x/3 = 6 - 3
x/3 = 3
x = 3*3
x = 9

(I feel like I should say that you can add or subtract whatever number you want, or multiply and divide by any number but zero, even if it doesn't help you get x alone, and the equation will still be true. It just might not help you solve the equation, and your teachers will likely think you're silly.)

I'm guessing at some of the questions here, because how you wrote it confused me. It should be fine if you check them first.

12 = (a/ 36) + 17
12 - 17 = a/36
-5 = a/36
36(-5) = a
-180 = a

18 - r = 42
-r = 42 - 18
-r = 24
r = -24

80 = 23 - 3v
80 - 23 = -3v
57 = -3v
57/-3 = v
-19 = v

-2q - 63 = 47
-2q = 47 + 63
-2q = 110
q = 110/-2
q = -55

(-x /2) + 4 = 12
-x/2 = 12 - 4
-x/2 = 8
-x = 8 * 2
-x = 16
x = -16

-5 = -19 - (x/7)
-5 + 19 = -x/7
14 = -x/7
7*14 = -x
98 = -x
-98 = x

This is way too easy for me.
I believe you mean in "a over 36 + 17" you mean "a/36 + 17" and not "a/(36+17)
Just make it look like you're showing "your work", I'm listing all the steps.
Hidden stuff:
12 = a/36 + 17
subtract 12 in both sides, 17 - 12 = 5
0=a/36+5
-5=a/36
multiply both sides by 36
a=-180


18 - r = 42
sub 18
-r = 42-18
solve
-r=24
invert
r=-24


80 = 23 - 3v
sub 23
57 = -3v
divide all shit by -3
v=-19



-2q - 63 = 47
add 63 both sides
-2q = 110
divide all shit by -2
q=-55


- X/2 + 4 = 12
sub 4 both sides
-x/2=8
mult by 2
-x=16
invert
x=-16

Your teacher is a negative whore...

add 19 to both sides (-5+19=19-5)

I had such a horrible teacher last year (also 8th grade) that I had no idea what any of this meant. But my new teacher helps me understand so much better. Biggrin
