RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Judging people

I feel like judging people is wrong, but it's like a reflex, when I am above someone at something, I immediately judge him, although I myself don't like to be judged!

So I think I shouldn't judge other people if I don't want to be judged, but it's hard to resist! Almost everybody judges other people, most of the time in their mind and not out loud.

What is your opinion on judging?

Re: Judging people

I think humans will judge each other indefinitely. The trick is to not let that judgement influence your behavior towards people.

It might be possible to achieve a state of mind where you judge people as little as possible, though. Maybe I'll start working towards that.

Re: Judging people

I do it a lot... it's useful in the sense that it's kinda like a quick way to classify people... but yeah, on the other hand, you can be wrong about someone just as easily.

I think it's generally fine to do it as long as you keep it to yourself. I mean, I judge a lot of people as "stupid idiots" based on some of the things they say or do... I don't think I'm gonna be able to stop doing that anytime soon unless a massive amount of people suddenly grow up and start being a lot more mature. Shrug

Re: Judging people

A little judging is pretty much instinct but some people seem to go over the top.

Example, "You're like those teenagers that get drunk all the time", or people that suddenly fear you and judge for being different when they find out that you dropped out.

I prefer to be around unassuming people to these judgmental types.

Judging people is fine as long as you judge them correctly.

Re: Judging people

its human nature to judge.

the thing is to learn to control the judgement where it is not so harsh but pretty fair and unbiased. if its biased or unfair its just another stereotype.

Re: Judging people

I'll elaborate on my answer. Not judging people is next to impossible. You can't see how someone acts and not judge what they do. Your judgment may be neutral, but by recognizing their existance you have already judged them.

Good judgement is another term for wisdom. It's not something that you can just do. It takes time and effort to develop just like any other virtue.

I've never let my school interfere with my education.

Re: Judging people

Judging people is inevitable. Judging is extreamly minimalistic at a young age. Think about it, toddlers will befriend just about anything, and anyone. This is becuase they have not undergone conditioning yet. This conditioning is known as socialization. Socialization is the information you pick up from all around you, in this process you establish likes and dislikes, personality and a slew of other things. If you would like to know more take a sociology class.

As a person gets older thins start to be taken into play. We take into accout our strengths and weaknesses, likes and dilikes, then gauge them in and then start to formulate what we think about people from what we know about them. This process gets longer and more drawn out the older we get and as a result we pass more judgments.

From a sociological perspective it is ABSOLUTLY inevitable to judge people. Or are we talking about ACTING on the judgements we have?

Whilst some work diligently there are those who ask why. I am one of them
