RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Silmilar to this thread

And this one.

I already made it here

Just make a list of some saying you hate.

Examples:
"Get over it."
"The grass is greener on the other side."
"Lighten up."

Yeah it also takes more energy for you to tell me that than it does to shut up and leave me alone.

Go to work. Send your kids to school. Follow fashion. Act normal. Walk on the pavement. Watch TV. Save for your old age. Obey the law. Repeat after me: "I am free."

As benign as the intentions may be, any system that forces people into an environment where they have no say in their lives is a situation ripe for abuse of power.

Re: Phrases that piss you off

I thought "get over it" was a funny phrase... Now, I don't like the context in which it is used.
"Everybody learn, you learn all your life, I'm x-years-old and I still learn"
The sentence teachers or school personal answered without looking if it fitted in the conversation, when I was in school, during person to person conversation. "Ah, yes, I thought it was cancelled yesterday, not today!" "You learn all your life, even at my age I still learn!"; "So, my parents said we can't afford to pay the class trip..." "You know, everyone learn, all your life, even at 40 I'm still learning, even now...".
I even heard another kid being said everybody-learn-all-our-life, after asking if someone saw his inhalator. WTF.
Different teachers and school personal told me that, multiple times, did they know they were all saying the same stuffs and it was totally unrelated? And they looked serious while answering that.
There was another sentence like this, but I forgot it.

Quote:"EPIC FAIL”
Yep – we all know the kind of person who uses this phrase as well! Currently in a deep and disturbingly fulfilling relationship with their computer, this person has decided real life is so depressingly – well… ‘real’ – that escaping it as often as possible is the key to health, wealth and all-round ‘awesomeness.’ Never mind that they have no friends, a dead-end job they hate and are still living with their parents – their prowess in a world that only exists in megabyte form gives them the right to feel vastly superior to you in just about everything. If you prove yourself to be not as clued-up as they are about unfunny internet in-jokes or the latest groovy online roleplaying game they will bellow this ridiculous phrase at you – forgetting they are no longer at their computer and therefore in ‘real’ as opposed to ‘fake’ territory – like they have just defeated you in a General Election. Yeah... you, with your friends and your social life and realistic perspective on the world, must be mocked for not ‘getting’ the Chuck Norris jokes – whilst they, with their Level 80 cartoon elf wizard sitting on their hard drive at home, are clearly the superior being in every way!
Errr…. no. Get a life, you sad losers. A real one, out in the outdoors, outside of your bedroom. Where people don’t earn their living trying to get a full matching set of purple armour and killing cartoon spiders that inexplicably carry cash with them.

Re: Phrases that piss you off

"Grow up" and any variations.

I don't hate the expression itself, but the context it's used in. When I hear it used, it means "quit complaining and deal with it" which means "Just shut up and accept what ever bullshit we give you".

Don't get me started on "life isn't fair", especially when used to justify unfair treatment.

That sounds like one of those blow off expressions like "That's life" that people use when they know they don't know how to answer a question. Only this one makes even less sense. You mistake the time of some event and it's a learning opportunity? WTF?

Some more I despise.

"Maybe you're the problem" (hear it on message boards a lot. When someone vents or lets off steam, there's always someone who has to play devils advocate and try to put the blame on the person with the problems.)

"Because I said so". A truly frusturating one to hear. There is no reason parents can't give a good reason why they want you to do something. I think a lot of parents have used this at one time and if you were stubborn like me, you would not accept this answer.

"When you get a job" Yes when I get a job, I'll have to deal with that bullshit, but I'm not at a job now so what's your point?

Repeating the same thing as an answer to everything: Because no matter how many good points you make, no matter how much sense you're making, the arguement isn't going anywhere. It's like because I said so in a way because they probably know you have a point, but because THEY have authority over you, they don't have to answer your puny arguements. So frusturating.

Re: Phrases that piss you off

Got a few more.

"Quit your whining" and even more the even more infuriating "WAAAAA WAAAAA" to mock those with complaints. This is usually the responce I get when I voice my criticisms of stupid rules and such. Apparently, I should just accept that it's part of life (another expression I despise) and that complaining about it will do nothing. Seriously, some people can get downright nasty if you question some stupid rule that has nothing to do with them. Which leads to...

"Be an adult" I wouldn't hate this so much if it didn't mean "just shut up and accept it" more times than not.

"Don't do the crime if you can't do the time". Another annoying "adult" catchphrase that just reeks of condensation. This is assuming the "Crimes" commited aren't just breaking some arbitrary rule in place. Seriously, why are dress code violations and candy in school such big deals?

I could probably come up with a million more (as I filled up other threads of this nature with other any catchphrases), but as of now, those are the ones which are stupid.
