RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017
The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.
If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.
To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.
I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.
I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.
I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.
I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.
Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.
Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.
-SoulRiser

Anti School - Pro Learning -- A documentary
Well I am bored, and I think I'm going to make an Anti School documentary, to improve my film and video skills
Just wondering if anybody had any useful information to contribute or anything they think should be in it.
Also, who would be some good people to interview (Other than SoulRiser )

I suggest Rebelnerd. Not only can he write in grammatically-sound sentences, but he is knowledgeable in politics, youth rights; those sorts of things. He knows the ins & outs of school life and doesn't afraid of anything. ;D
Oh, and for the research: School-survival itself is good for the anti-schooler's POV, but look at some other sites as well. That way the documentary will be more well-rounded....if you want it to be, anyway.
Also, welcome to the forums.

I suggest John Taylor Gatto... if you can get ahold of him. He'd make great interview material.
Also, Doc Johnson (if you can get ahold of him), xcriteria, Rebelnerd & Eidolon.
My internets are too slow for webcam stuff though. But if you film yourself asking the question, I can film myself answering it. XD

LOL, I'll see who I can get a hold of, and after I've done some research, I'll probably just email you some questions
What about stuff you'd like to see covered?

I'd let you interview me. I'm nothing special though.
I used to be "The circus" as I forgot my login, but then hey-ho I remembered it.

If you want to make it well-rounded, try Paraless, get both sides of the story in. And maybe me, if ya want.

You're welcome to interview me. Whether or not my opinion matters, I'll let the video decide.

Re: Anti School - Pro Learning -- A documentary
Awesome! This some something we really need, and something I've wanted to do for a long time. Eventually I'd like to get a team together to make a really well-produced, professional documentary that could go to festivals and be distributed.
Let me know what I can do to help. I have some experience with video editing, After Effects, etc., and also I've thought a lot about how to go about making a documentary on this subject.
Maybe we could have an irc or skype meeting to brainstorm ideas?

Re: Anti School - Pro Learning -- A documentary
How will the interviews be done? Recorded skype video calls?
http://www.skypecap.com/ looks decent.
Also, what about content other than interviews? People could record some video clips, too, or we could find stock footage... like of schools or people using ss or out-of-school learning experiences...
And... will there be a narrator, or will it all be done using interviews/clips?

Re: Anti School - Pro Learning -- A documentary
I could help too. Hmm... I have Sony Vegas somewhere around the house, though I have no idea how to use it. I suggest random street interviews. Like they did in "A Conversation About Race." (It sounds nazi-ish, but it's really extremely well rounded, I think.)
I'm up for an interview, though I doubt anyone would care.

Re: Anti School - Pro Learning -- A documentary
Wow, been away for a bit and so many replies. I figured interviews could be done over skype/person/phone call, maybe 1 or 2 over email and just flash up parts of the text. I have some experience with video editing, and the footage will be a combo of stock and stuff I make or anybody else can make and send to me. I might make a website for it with a place for certain people to upload footage (I'm a web developer). I'm going to really start working on this, because I think it will be very beneficial to the cause, although I'll try and remain unbiased.
I might try and interview the local school board here as well, but I don't know how well that would go. How about suggestions for a catchy name?
