RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Teachers that don't suck infinite ass

My English teacher. He rocks. He makes classes a totally random entertaining experience. Plus whenever everyone finishes their coursework on time, in next computer room lesson he lets us go on "independant study." In other words, he lets us do what we want. Biggrin

Re: Teachers that don't suck infinite ass

My Seventh grade teacher, Mrs.Ryan, she was a total kid at heart, she'd actually take the time to talk to us if she saw us at recess or in the hallways during other classes, not 'better hurry up' talks, asking how we were, anything interesting, she was the best teacher ever, damn it, why couldn't I have failed several grades, now she's teaching grade Two's.

My 10th grade English teacher and 9th grade social studies teacher, they have strong respect for me although I do get terrible grades in their class and we can have meaningful discussion.

Re: Teachers that don't suck infinite ass

I've actually got a fair list of these, though the teachers that do suck ass still outnumber these.

1. Ms. Boland, a young woman (probably in her early/mid twenties back then) who showed up midway through the first grade, first as a sit-in teacher for various classes, and then she got a job at the school, which prompted a need to split off some students from the classes. I was one of them. Why? Because I liked her as both a teacher and a person. She hung around pretty much for the rest of my years at elementary school, though never again as my teacher.

2. Mrs. Shriver, my second grade teacher (who since then has jumped between first, second, and third). If I remember correctly, she was into her thirties when I was with her. Very friendly, exceptional at teaching, and we had a fairly good relationship.

3. Mrs. Wentz, ye olde kindergarten teacher, now retired unfortunately. Granted, you can't really consider kindergarten to be a grade, but I still learned in there, damn it. She practically put me on my path to acquiring actual intellect, and set me a little ahead of the game when first grade came around. Once again, very friendly woman. I've always missed her.

4. Mrs. Kaplan, my fourth AND fifth grade teacher. That's right; when the time came for a new grade, she moved up with the ENTIRE CLASS, myself included. Needless to say, we all had an excellent relationship with her. She was notorious for her love of Betty Boop.

5. Pretty much my entire sixth grade loadout of teachers, with the exception of one (who wasn't bad, but not great either). My Math teacher Mrs. Hallows, English teacher Mrs. Berlin, and Science teacher Mr. Price. They were all fairly friendly and excelled in teaching their particular subject. While this was the grade when I started letting my grades slack, I'm pretty sure all the teachers understood.

6. Oh, I can't forget Ms. Jefferies (?), who has since become Mrs. Aurelius. Very young woman (I suspect she had just turned 21 when I met her in the third grade). She took over for our third grade teacher while she was pregnant.

7. And then there was Mr. Strauch, the long-term PE teacher. Physical education was both useful AND fun back then, and he made that pretty clear. He also retired last year, I believe. Knew my sister, he did... Great guy, very funny.

8. Middle school comes now, and while this is indeed where I allowed myself to not give a damn about the useless classes, I had some notable teachers, including my seventh grade English teacher (Mr. Havlovic), both my science teachers (Can't remember their names for the life of me, but they were female), and my eighth grade history teacher who was a replacement before the year even started (Mrs. Thomas). All of them taught fairly well, and at least three of the four were decently friendly. We also listened to old music nigh-daily in Thomas's class, which was great.

9. High school... Ah, the dreaded years. I still managed to find a few good teachers. I won't list why they were good, I'll just tell you who they were.
- Mr. Zimmer, math/science teacher. Young guy, probably mid twenties at best. Always wore quasi-Hawaiian shirts and purple sandals.
- Mrs. Wold, geology teacher. Very stern, but had a sense of humor and sarcastic tendencies.
- Mrs. Cancarevic, english teacher. Another one of the younger teachers I had who, I believe, was 22 or 23 when I was in her class, but looked like an 18-year-old. Kinda stern, but funny and friendly.
- Honorable mention to Mr. Haver, a gym teacher who put up with so much shit from most of the class I was in the second half of freshman year.
- There ARE one or two others, but I can't rightly remember them... Oh well, the thought counts, right?

Re: Teachers that don't suck infinite ass

Mrs. Evanich, my social studies teacher, she was a nice teacher, and she made everything fun, while we were learning about Egypt, instead of reading it from a book, we were given a sheet, and we had to translate our theme song ( Rolleyes ) into hieroglyphics. It was much win.

Mr. Thompson, another one of my social Studies teachers, and also my second uncle. He won, plain & simple, and I knew he won even before I found out I was related to him.

Mr. Damiano is the best teacher I've ever had the privilege to meet. He's my AP Biology teacher, and he literally works us to the point of our brains frying, but the stuff he teaches us is important, he doesn't waste time on the details. He was part of the dress code committee, but when he didn't agree to the uniforms, he was never invited back, or told where it was being held. We're allowed to eat, as long as it's not in to lab area (for obvious reasons). We even had someone come in and teach the class for a day, and when we asked why, he said that it's because it happens to all the weird teachers. Laugh But what made me rage, was this girl comes in and says as I'm walking in the door "I'm here so other teachers can learn from an experienced teacher like myself." Words cannot express. In fact, he had to correct her on something, inexperienced teacher my ass, he was my dad's teacher.

Wow, this turned into a rage fest.

Re: Teachers that don't suck infinite ass

All of my teachers are actually pretty okay. I can tell that they generally enjoy what they do and that they think that they're doing something good for the community. Even the administrators, though they can act like pricks sometimes, sometimes come into the classroom and give somewhat interesting talks on a subject.

Which makes me even more angry that every single one of them is held back because of stupid things like standardized tests and curriculum. They could all be truly great teachers were it not for that.

Re: Teachers that don't suck infinite ass

My grade 7-9 computers teacher, Mr. Ivaniuk. A short, old but funny man. He never held back those who were far higher than the curriculum, so he taught the kids networking while I coded during the class. I also helped him with the website (I remember his WTF-stare when I wrote html colors with hex instead of words), and he's known for promising an A for anyone who hacks the school server.
Apart from that, every teacher I've had while having individual lessons(school phobia yay) seemed to be completely different than what they were like in class. Except those young, fresh, simply to say - noobs. Those can't even teach anymore, and the old crew goes on retirement now... someone should do something, and fast.

Problem, officer?

My Grade 12 Global History teacher. His goal for the year was that by the end of the year, we had improved critical thinking abilities. Nothing more, nothing less. He actually taught interesting stuff too.

Re: Teachers that don't suck infinite ass

My current Art of Animation and Graphic Design teacher. He's a great, calm guy who actually lets us have fun, and doesn't mind us playing games or doing other work in class, just as long as we get our projects done within the end of the week. He's laid-back, and very down to Earth, he actually understands that we have limits and work from other classes to deal with. The projects are actually worth doing, too, and are almost always fun to do. I almost wish he would give us more work, its actually enjoyable and clearly explained for once in my life. Not to mention the course is classified as job-training and gives us college credit, and actually prepares us for working (at least in the field of graphic design and animation).

My World History Laptop teacher last year was pretty awesome as well. At first glace she seemed like the kind of person who would be uptight and absolutely strict about everything, however, the first thing she asked me when our class had pulled out our laptops for working was "Oh, its that an AMD processor? (she had noticed the little sticker on the laptop) They are much better for gaming, right?" I was just dumbstruck that a teacher like her would ever ask such a question, she was a nerd like me, pretty much. She made learning history fun and enjoyable, work was challenging at times, but not impossible, and she always clearly explained everything that we needed to do without going overboard. We also got to watch movies like Pear Harbor, Saving Private Ryan, and some other older wartime movies. She also made offhand references to memes without ruining them and showed us some interesting videos off the internet (such as the incident where Bush was nearly nailed by shoes). One of the best teachers ever.

Re: Teachers that don't suck infinite ass

My 8th grade Algebra 1 teacher was really cool. He made even the boring bookwork required by the curriculum seem interesting with his playful eccentricity. On Fridays, he would allow someone to bring a CD to class and we would listen to music as we worked. One day, my friend brought a CD with Japanese music on it. Ah, fun times.

My current Biology teacher is fun as well. In his class, we actually get to do labs and experiments rather than the paperwork and quizzes that dominated every one of my science-related classes from 6th grade onward. He's also one of the few people who seems to be aware of the extreme state of disrepair in my school.

Re: Teachers that don't suck infinite ass

My current Chemistry 1 teacher: he is honestly one of the coolest teachers i have ever had, he's had a messed up life and he is not scared to share those experiences with us (even though administration gets after his ass about it but owell). He lets us joke and share are experiences with us and when LAB time comes he pretty much lets us sink or swim. Cause it is a higher level course in my school he lets the students design, control, and do are own fun little experiments. I LOL on about half of them cause we can make whatever we want. its cool. Besides that he is just a nice caring guy with just a hint of sarcasm.

Re: Teachers that don't suck infinite ass

My Chemistry Professor. He was this old Dutch guy with a slight accent, and every Friday he'd do a demo, like blowing up hydrogen in a room full of 200 people. And he had this running joke where he'd say "time for safety goggles" and put on some crazy novelty sunglasses.
On the last day of the semester, he puts on this fucking pimp glasses and starts playing a Gold Digger from the speakers (the uncensored version). Then he asks if anyone wants the lyrics, and starts reading from a sheet of paper:
"Now, I'm not saying that she is a gold digger. But she is not messing with any...destitute man of color."
Yes. That's a direct quote. This guy is the fucking man and even though most of us will be happy just to pass that class, he was still cool.

Actually, there was one last year. Mr. Basilone. He never really joked around much, but compared to all the other teachers, was very leniant about the work. He allowed us to actually do other shit after we were done with our work, and wasn't really bitchy.

I'd say my 6th grade teachers, Ms.Conley and Mr.Thames. They were reallly nice and the work wasn't painful at all.

I'm not one of his friendy-friend students becuase I slack and am ashamed to even look at him, but Mr. Koops, my English teacher.
I hate writing with a passion, but he's funny as hell. And he's not stupid. Our class discussions always wander, and we even got to talking about why we HAVE to talk some classes, and he joked "But society wants you to be a well-rounded person." and a student said "Yeah, God-forbid someone be pointy."

And we laughed.

Also...hmmm...I dunno.

Re: Teachers that don't suck infinite ass

My computer class teacher. We just call her Coach.

She's awesome. Plain and simple.

Instead of wasting my time with basic things that the rest of the class is doing, she allows me to work on more complicated things that are more to my level. She also allows the slower students to do simpler things than the rest of the class, so they don't just waste their time with things that they won't understand without the building blocks that lead up to what the rest of the class is doing. She's a nice lady, and will talk to you about any problem - inside of school and out. She has gone as far as talking to other teachers to solve problems I may be having with them.

I told her I really didn't feel like going to my last period English class that day, so I'm sitting there in the class, and the teacher's phone rings. It's good 'ol Coach. After talking to the english teacher for a few seconds, the english teacher calls me up and tells me that Coach said there was a problem with one of the computers in the lab that she needed help with. There wasn't a problem, it was just Coach being awesome.

These paragraphs don't even begin to describe how awesome she is - if she was my age, I'd marry that lady. She's the ONLY teacher I've ever had that let me work at my level, and let me work on things that apply to what I want to do with my life. This is what teachers should be like.

What annoys me the most, is she is one of the lowest paid - yet hardest working teachers.

Independence limited,
Freedom of choices made for you my friend,
Freedom of speech is words that they will bend,
Freedom... with their exception.

Re: Teachers that don't suck infinite ass

My former algebra teacher...I'll tell you the reason why he was awesome. It was because if you wanted to learn, he taught you. If you didn't want to learn, he didn't care as long as you shut the fuck up and didn't interrupt his class. He didn't waste time trying to teach the kids who would rather be running around in a daisy field than learning what he had to teach, and there for he taught a lot of students more than they would learn in other classes, while at the same time teaching the uninterested students what they learned in other classes...which was absolutely nothing.
