RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

PC

Now here is something I do not understand. This is a concept that has been quite alien to me since I was to young to understand what it really meant. I'm really not sure it's not alien to me now! I'm talking PC. I'm talking about the fear of giving offense. Political correctness.

You know how it is. The fear of giving offense to people, whether actual, imagined or theoretical, now causes language to be changed and become more guarded - and either hobbled or fairer depending upon your point of view. I don't know if a being like me can ever comprehend or embrace it but it does seem to be here to stay. Whatever it is?

So, tell me all about it. Is political correctness really a sign of civilization?

Re: PC

I don't think it's wrong to speak carefully, but I think it's more important to be careful to speak truthfully than to avoid offending anyone.

I know it seems like that hardly requires any change in language--it's what you say that matters, not how you say it, right? But I don't think that's entirely true. Wording can, for example, imply similarities between things that may actually be fairly different. The best example I can think of right now is that statistic that around 30% of child molesters are homosexual, which would seem to be surprisingly high. What the statistics show is that 30% of men who molest children molest boys, and in some sense it's perfectly reasonable to call those men homosexual, or at least bisexual. The problem is that although men who molest boys and men who have sex with men can both be called homosexual (or possibly bisexual), there's actually no particular connection between the two groups: only a couple percent of the men in relevant studies had sex with adult men. This is pretty much what you'd expect. I don't have a problem with that sort of claim because it offends me or might offend someone else. My problem with it is that it implies things that are blatantly untrue.

"Do we treat straight public sex differently than we do gay public sex? Of course. Straight people are so proud of their public sex that they named a cocktail after it."

Re: PC

It seems to me to be a product of this modern culture of personal rights. The right of the individual, the right to free expression, of no-one can tell you what to do, of no-one can prevent you from speaking as you choose! All that. Rights over duties. Rights over responsibilities, you know? Do as you please taking the place of doing what is right. Oh show me respect, instead of earning respect.

Re: PC

Big hassle is normally pointless IMO.

Anything that ever happened or will... one condition, it has to be amazing.

Re: PC

I'll try and step in but vatman simplify this so people who are not of your level of thought can understand(Not this fancy wording).

From what I get you say that freedom of expression takes a back seat nowadays in fear of offending others or losing what you have(Job, social standing, etc).

only example I can bring up this late is my dear mother freaking out on me for calling out the bible on the little tibits it has with it and I'm also wrong for thinking homosexuals are no different than anybody else.

Exactly. It chokes itself. The original, or what looks like it, intention was to give freedom of expression, but it doesn't fix anything. That whole no-one can't prevent you what to do is false, it's not working, They can prevent you from going to school. If you yell "Fuck Obama" loudly enough, you will be labeled a racist, even though your intention was on the person's character, what he does, not his color. Censorship still exists.

Re: PC

See, back in the day, discrimination meant lynching niggers. Now people complain about discriminitory "language" and such.

I've never let my school interfere with my education.

Re: PC

I was trying to get onto a track to where we can talk about our lovely utopia. Where people say exactly what they feel and think without social protocol and limitation. In otherwords..."Freedom of Speech"
