RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

ACT Scores and Heat

So, a teacher o' mine said something interesting, the other day. I can't quote him exactly, because, well, I don't remember it exactly, but it was something along the lines of:

The better our school does on their ACT tests, the more money our school gets.

Now, doesn't that seem a little f'ed up to you?

Gee, this school is doing really poorly, so let's deprive them of money to make them better! Gosh, because, they're scores are bound to improve next year if the same old cruddy textbooks are left into play (maybe someone will write some helpful hints into one!), and we'll certainly see an improvement if ALL OF THEIR FINGERS FREEZE OFF BECAUSE THE SCHOOL CAN'T AFFORD ANY HEAT.

Now, this is an issue that hits close to home. Our school, last year, failed miserably with ACT scores. Consequently, we got no money, and so, we are suffering from an absolute lack of paper and HEAT. It's so fricken cold in the building that students regularly walk around wearing heavy jackets and GLOVES.

This is rediculous.

How can a school improve it's test scores without any money? (Aside from the whole test scores are stupid thing, if we MUST have them, deciding money allotment based on the results is DUMB). The good schools just keep getting richer, and the bad schools keep getting poorer, on this system. I mean, I understand there needs to be SOME kind of incentive for schools to actually attempt to educate their students, but really, money IS NOT IT because IT'S LIKE GIVING FOOD TO PEOPLE WHO ARE ALREADY FULL.

It's a waste, and it's unfair to students and teachers alike.

I'm disgusted with the system. It can't even manage the parts it DOES have in place properly.

Nobody lets an open-minded person into politics. You'd be considered politically incorrect by trying to make something better.

Problem, officer?

I agree.
My school doesn't do very well on the CMT (connecticut mastery test) in return we don't get much money. last year, apparently, we couldn't afford staples....

And i think the school is using Thade and me and some other kids to make them look good. But it's just a theory based on the fact that we get 'advance' on everything on that stupid test.

But, yeah, depriving schools of money because of bad test scores is bs.

Haha, maybe it's not a bad thing to be "used" by the school to bolster test scores. You can always pull the "I'm making our school look better with my test scores and thus earning more money!" trick; a useful argument for getting out of trouble and giving authority a loss for words. Biggrin

Oh lawl.

Same here, we barely use heat, and sure, a jacket would make us better, but WE'RE NOT ALLOWED THOSE! Jackets are non-uniform, and if they have hoods, you're obviously harboring weapons. So therefore, we have to freeze our asses off. It's mainly the lunch room, our group sat right by the cracked open window, and we all froze our asses off. Then some group stole our spot, so now we have a warm spot. Laugh

It pisses me off...

Try to garner some public attention. Get the parents/students to petition, who knows. You might not have frostbite for once.

Haha, yeah, jackets arn't allowed at our school either. They cite that one video where the guy pulls about 50 guns out of his pants as their reason why. Which, understandable, but really, IT'S FREEZING.

Re: ACT Scores and Heat

There are a bunch of signs aroudn teh school saying "no hoodies"

It began in 7th grade because it was a 'safety hazard' -.-
Thade, Zoey, and I wore out hoodies regardless. I was SO tempted to go around and rip ALL those signs down.

I think whenever i see them in the halls now i'll rip them down.

Honestly, my school is retarded with heating and cooling. In the Winter we get cooling, in the Spring we get heating. Even our teachers rant about it.

I doubt that's true. It's more likely that the school complies with an immoral system that demands by 'law' that they channel money into the coffers of big businesses that make things like ridiculous 'reading programs', state mandated testing systems and materials, and new math books (as if math has changed since the last edition).

If you want to be a different fish, you've got to jump out of the school.

No. It's not understandable. It's hysterical.

http://nces.ed.gov/fastfacts/

Quote:Nearly 50 million students are heading off to approximately 99,000 public elementary and secondary schools for the fall term

The chances of getting hurt by some nutty kid with a 22 hidden away in his jacket is something like 1 in 50,000,000. If you make enough kids angry by freezing them maybe the chances rise to 2 in 50,000,000. These stats aren't literal but my point is the chance of something like that happening is miniscule. Dictating policy based on that kind of paranoia is shameful. If they're worried about students getting hurt they need to make safe passageways away from moving vehicles for students to use when walking to and fro. They need to provide healthy food at lunch. They need to take kids out of double block reading and let them play and get some sun. Car accidents. Juvenile diabetes. These are the types of things that are hurting young students.

If you want to be a different fish, you've got to jump out of the school.
