RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The science of falling asleep.

How exactly do we fall asleep? We close our eyes, relax, and we enter a world beyond the beyond. Biggrin

But yeah. How exactly does it go?

Re: The science of falling asleep.

Hmmm...

OK, you close your eyes, lay down, relaxed... since your body is not doing anything (As in you walking around), it slowly drifts off into thoughts? Or no thoughts at all, just where you are not paying attention to anything. Even though your immune system and everything is still working, you are relaxing, allowing you to, well, get some rest.

Your brain goes into some crazy mode.

Anything that ever happened or will... one condition, it has to be amazing.

Re: The science of falling asleep.

I just did a little self-research on that. The key moment is when you suddenly don't feel like moving anything, and your thoughts gradually become more real than ever. So the dreams aren't sudden.

Problem, officer?

First you lay down, get comfortable, then you click the off switch on your bellybutton, a pop up will come up. SHUT DOWN, RESTART or RESTART, shut down is not good, stand by works best. All programs will be put on pause and sleep will happen.

I can't trust you, I sense some trolling.

Ceiling Cat's post made a lot of sense.

Re: The science of falling asleep.

It's impossible to know the exact moment you fall asleep. In the next morning, try to remember when you exactly fell asleep. You can't.

Maybe sleep is the real step into the beyond, and death being pretty much permanent sleep is the definitive move into the beyond. Where dreams become real, literally.

I thought about that a few years back. Also, if you don't have a dream, it is pretty hard to think about what it was like.

Re: The science of falling asleep.

I rarely dream, creepily enough. I think the last dream I remember having was in Auguest wherein two people from Left 4 Dead got devoured by Erebus from Persona 3 FES, whilst a skeleton screamed "YOU MUST PAY A FEE." Otherwise, I just have this little blink gap where I finally fall asleep, then my eyes snap open and it's sometime later.

Fukken creepy.

Re: The science of falling asleep.

sleepers pass through five stages 1, 2, 3, 4 and REM (rapid eye movement) sleep. These stages progress cyclically from 1 through REM then begin again with stage 1. A complete sleep cycle takes an average of 90 to 110 minutes. The first sleep cycles each night have relatively short REM sleeps and long periods of deep sleep but later in the night, REM periods lengthen and deep sleep time decreases.

Stage 1 is light sleep where you drift in and out of sleep and can be awakened easily. In this stage, the eyes move slowly and muscle activity slows. During this stage, many people experience sudden muscle contractions preceded by a sensation of falling.

In stage 2, eye movement stops and brain waves become slower with only an occasional burst of rapid brain waves. When a person enters stage 3, extremely slow brain waves called delta waves are interspersed with smaller, faster waves. In stage 4, the brain produces delta waves almost exclusively. Stages 3 and 4 are referred to as deep sleep, and it is very difficult to wake someone from them. In deep sleep, there is no eye movement or muscle activity. This is when some children experience bedwetting, sleepwalking or night terrors.

In the REM period, breathing becomes more rapid, irregular and shallow, eyes jerk rapidly and limb muscles are temporarily paralyzed. Brain waves during this stage increase to levels experienced when a person is awake. Also, heart rate increases, blood pressure rises, males develop erections and the body loses some of the ability to regulate its temperature. This is the time when most dreams occur, and, if awoken during REM sleep, a person can remember the dreams. Most people experience three to five intervals of REM sleep each night.

Infants spend almost 50% of their time in REM sleep. Adults spend nearly half of sleep time in stage 2, about 20% in REM and the other 30% is divided between the other three stages. Older adults spend progressively less time in REM sleep.

Re: The science of falling asleep.

I dream all the time. I don't remember alot of it but I do love it when I don't dream at all and your aware of not dreaming. You shut your eyes and the open them and its light outside. it's crazy.
