RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

They already think I'm either insane, stoned out of my mind, or a genius, depending on what the last thing I said was. Usually the stoned out of my mind, even though I have never smoked, never drank, never done any of that, well they all have.

The irony of that makes me burst out laughing every time they say it, so they think I'm crazy.

Hah, some people always used to say I act like I'm permanently stoned even though I've never smoked anything either. Giggle

I agree, being wierd means being yourself wich is being unique.

I also think that acknowledging every flaw of school and still going to it already means that your mature enough.

Re: Address to School-Survival Members

Learning freely and without restriant is a great idea. I always try to learn something, from my classmates, roomates, my wife, coworkers, animals, nature itself. You should never stop learning. I have learned something though. basic economics tells us that when there is a product people will buy, it continues to be processed. the average person is not a free thinking and willing to learn as most of us are here, therefore, they need a product. that product is public schooling. parents do not have the time or energy (or intellegence in some cases) to teach thier children what they want to learn. children are highly motivated to learn from the start, but can be taught bad habits that stifle thier desire to learn. they become lethargic and complacent, and need to be spoon fed all of thier education. i feel that people who are ready and willing to teach thier own children, or children who have a strong desire to learn and parents open minded enough to let them, should unschool. This is a process, and i wish more than anything that it could happen overnight. but this is a disease, you have to prescribe the antibiiotics, clean the site, maintain the working parts until it is healed.

RE: Address to School-Survival Members

Ok, l have a problem with what he's trying to say. l mainly agree with the first few sentences but....
(12-17-2009 09:53 AM)schoolhater234 Wrote:  This starts with you. Before you can free the others, you have to free yourselves. Free yourselves of the prejudices society has placed upon you. And yes, that even includes teachers. Many teachers are very well meaning. They're not all out to "get" you. Free yourselves of the name calling, fear mongering, and hatred that is so prevalent in societies today. Free yourselves of the idea that kids can't make a difference. Too many kids I know say, "I would, but I'm just a kid. I can't do anything." You CAN.
So.. is it only me who thinks this is corny and seedy? It reminds me of those Disney movies where "love conquers all and evil will always fall." Not in the real world my friend. And secondly, you've just said the easy part, all you've done is talk about what we should do, but not how. It is already hard to identify a problem, but it is even harder to find a solution for it. What is YOUR solution?

(12-17-2009 09:53 AM)schoolhater234 Wrote:  It certainly is harder for a kid to make a difference in this world, because adults see themselves as knowing more. And the truth is, sometimes adults do know more.
Yeah, it is true that sometimes adults do know more. However, sometimes they know less, and sometimes, they're more ignorant than some kids and adolescence and they're only fueled by their arrogance, not their knowledge.... So what is your point?

(12-17-2009 09:53 AM)schoolhater234 Wrote:  No one can deny that adults have been around longer than kids... and living is learning, as many of us in the unschooling community like to say.
Ok, l half agree. Generally, you tend to know more from being around longer, or so there is a correlation. But simply saying that adults are smarter because they've been around longer is bad logic. It's like saying someone who's been in school longer is more brainwashed than someone who just went to school. You're not taking into account other factors such as "ability to get brainwashed", "naivety" or "cynicism" or anything else.

(12-17-2009 09:53 AM)schoolhater234 Wrote:  But- there is no need to fear. YOU TOO can learn. You can learn about whatever you like. That brings me to my final point- Free yourself from school!
Yes, l do exactly that, l learn a lot from the internet, but that's where l stop agreeing with you on this quoted part. My problem is, how do you free yourself from school? You're required by law to go to school, so it's pretty impossible to free yourself simply by not going, because you'll just end up getting people close to you into trouble with the law. And once again, things are easier said than done.

(12-17-2009 09:53 AM)schoolhater234 Wrote:  If there's one thing standing in the way of your learning and real education, it's school itself.
l have to strongly agree. People must stop correlating school to education. Education is not the same as school.

(12-17-2009 09:53 AM)schoolhater234 Wrote:  First you must focus on yourself. Once you've freed yourself from what you wish to free the others of, then revolution will be easier to come by. Take steps toward your goal... and have a damn good time doing them. :-)
l have to disagree on this final point too. l guess to a very, very, VERY small extent, it will make a revolution easier. But people are scared. Everyone is afraid to make the first steps, the first steps (not just the first step, but some of the steps afterwards too) requires either a lot of courage or a lot of stupidity. Either you know how to tackle all of the opposition, or you go in with an "l don't give a fuck" attitude. But l don't think both will work if your opposition is stubborn as a mule and doesn't care to listen. You can only convince people if they are willing to listen and they have strong morals. Otherwise, simply attempting to change the oppositions P.O.V by mere discussion is waiting for disaster and disappointment.
