RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Address to School-Survival Members

Hey all-

While it would be amazing if we could start some crazy revolution and take our lives back and convince everyone that school isn't good for them... it doesn't seem very likely at this point in time.

I don't mean to take away any of your hopes, but steps have to be taken.

This starts with you. Before you can free the others, you have to free yourselves. Free yourselves of the prejudices society has placed upon you. And yes, that even includes teachers. Many teachers are very well meaning. They're not all out to "get" you. Free yourselves of the name calling, fear mongering, and hatred that is so prevalent in societies today. Free yourselves of the idea that kids can't make a difference. Too many kids I know say, "I would, but I'm just a kid. I can't do anything." You CAN. It certainly is harder for a kid to make a difference in this world, because adults see themselves as knowing more. And the truth is, sometimes adults do know more. No one can deny that adults have been around longer than kids... and living is learning, as many of us in the unschooling community like to say.

But- there is no need to fear. YOU TOO can learn. You can learn about whatever you like. That brings me to my final point- Free yourself from school! If there's one thing standing in the way of your learning and real education, it's school itself.

First you must focus on yourself. Once you've freed yourself from what you wish to free the others of, then revolution will be easier to come by. Take steps toward your goal... and have a damn good time doing them. :-)

Good luck.

and we'll tell you it's noble, we'll tell you it's cool

for the times, they are not a-changin'
come mothers and fathers and friends of the slain
while we exploit your loses to fund our campaigns
we brought you the war, now there's no one to blame
you best hope the new leader ain't crazy
you can vote how you want but the outcomes the same

This thread is respectfully shit.

I want to see you, yes, you, OP, drop all your prejudices and hate before I can do so myself. If not, drop your saintliness and don't make threads like these that are dime-a-dozen.

And I want to see you drop at the blink of an eye hatred that was kept bottled up for years on end.

I dont think it's that which they are against. i think it's the prejudices the OP has displayed previously.

Re: Address to School-Survival Members

Yes, I was very surprised when I saw many of the responses to my post. By acting like that, you all are acting just like everyone else, exactly what I was trying to say not to do in my post. You all obviously have been affected by your society and the schooling system. I'm not denying I haven't either! Many times I find myself acting in ways I wish I was not acting. Many times I find myself being mean, hurting other people. I didn't mean to make it like I'm amazing and you're all flawed. I'm definitely not. But for myself and for all of you, we can all change and BE WHO WE WANT TO BE.

Sorry for any misunderstanding.

Re: Address to School-Survival Members

Being who you want to be is wonderful. But a few people celebrating their individuality won't make much of a difference, and if they did, it would be easy for their opponents to stifle them. Unless there is a genuine, dedicated, and politically aware movement that can unite all those scattered individuals in pursuit of a goal, we're never going to get anywhere.
Educating yourself is not enough. If a massive segment of the student population just started ignoring their schooling and learning things that the rest of society didn't want them to know, they won't just sit their wringing their hands. They'll come down on those free-spirited kids with intimidation and legislation specifically designed to force them back in line. And if the dissident students honestly believe that fighting for their freedom is only worth it if they're having "a damn good time," then they won't stand a chance.
I understand what you're trying to say here and I think it's admirable, but it's just not a realistic option with society the way it is. At least not on its own.

I think Buenaventura Durruti is a pretty cool guy. eh kills fascists and doesnt afraid of ruins.

TRIGGER WARNING: THIS TRIGGER WARNING CONTAINS TRIGGER WARNINGS!

Dear Tumblrites: Despite your wrongly self-diagnosed PTSD, no line of scientific evidence suggests people can be triggered over the internet. Triggering works through the senses (i.e. smell, taste, touch, vision, hearing.) but it goes through real time; if you're not experiencing it in real life as it's ACTUALLY HAPPENING in your ACTUAL life, you CANNOT be triggered. The only exception to this is if you have a seizure, but then again, that's triggered by epilepsy (i.e. rapidly-changing flashing lights) NOT PTSD. Remembering a bad incident is NOT the same thing as having a flashback. When you remember, you think; when you flashback, you feel.

I only partially agree with the OP. I would never say "children/adults know more/better." Just as I do not judge it by race, ethnicity or anything similar, I do not judge knowledge on the basis of age. Empiricism is reactionary, in my opinion.

This implies that there is no purposeful goal except for a collectively-pursued goal. That's patently untrue. Each of us has to live our own lives, and each of us can make a huge difference in our own life by making the most of it. The purpose of goals, of life, is each person's individual life. A movement consists of a number of individuals, and any broad movement of a revolutionary sort tends to trample the individual in the name of the leaders of the movement.

"The system" is not holding down individuals anywhere near as much as individuals' ingrained concepts, beliefs, and lack of self-awareness hold them down. A secondary cause of restraint is other individuals in one's life (like parents, peers, or significant other.) In the US at least, it's possible to homeschool in some form, drop out, change schools, or pressure your school to alter your requirements with an IEP, if you have your parents backing. It's fundamentally about what you do with your time, and secondarily negotiating what you can with your parents.

Contrary to what you may believe, we do not live under fascism. Yes, governments tend to feel threatened by collective movements fueled by chaos and the control of a few leaders, and blind rebellion. Yes, political ideals are contested. But that has little to do with what you can do with your life, unless your entire identity is bound up in a collective ideal.

This isn't about "celebrating our individuality", it's about being a individual, and making the most of one's time while one has the luxury of a place to stay, even if many hours of each week are stolen from you by being forced to go to school.

schoolhater234 Wrote:Yes, I was very surprised when I saw many of the responses to my post.
Start with the I: I, individual. And yeah, realizing that who you are and what you think is heavily based on your parents, the media, school, role models or some reaction to those things -- down to your deepest assumptions. Realizing that is an early step toward having a more independent perspective.

And hate is almost always a matter of seeing things you've rejected from yourself (memories, ways of using your mind, beliefs you've had or still partly have) onto others.

This is called "projection" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychological_projection and related to the following Biblical wisdom, of all things:
"Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother's eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, 'Let me take the speck out of your eye,' when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye."

This verily. Very well said. Yes

In a way, fighting against "the system" directly is actually acknowledging that it has power over us, and that it's important somehow. If people stopped believing it, it would cease to have power completely. Imagine the president ordering the generals of the army to do something, and the generals and the rest of the army going "Uh, wait, who the hell do you think you are to tell me what to do? You're just some guy...". Yeah sure, not likely to happen very soon, but it'd be better overall than just forcing them to allow people to do what they want - as if people need their permission.

QFT. It'll be just as hard to get other people to agree with us, especially when they've been fed bullshit all their lives through the system they're used to living in. Eh, the kids at my school who know about this forum probably think we're nuts anyway.

Yeah but then we have to do something about it, not just "be," but act.

Go to work. Send your kids to school. Follow fashion. Act normal. Walk on the pavement. Watch TV. Save for your old age. Obey the law. Repeat after me: "I am free."

The kids at my school who know of us think we are either geniuses or insane. At least we don't fall for all the blatant lies they always try to feed us.
