RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

Project-Based Schooling

[WARNING} Contains careless grammar, angsty teenage ranting, references to underground comic books, and opportunities for further explanations.

What do you think about project based schools?

For one, I spent my first year of highschool in a project based school. It was an indpendent public school funded by the Franklin Institute, and Bill Gates.
Check it out urself.:

I'd have to say even though the school is stressed on things like inquiry, creativity, collaboration, and group work It was a completely miserable experience for me.

Firstly, for some reason all the kids loved it. And that was mainly because they gave us labtops to use. So our work was not only physical and in some classes in textbooks, but it was also based online which made it a gateway for unorganization and confusion. Plus, what made it even worse is that they lied to us and said it was a test free school. I honestly, knew that was a falsehood the day I entered, because all schooling is a test.
Anyway, we don't get major tests like midterms, but we get these things called standards which are repetitive quizes that are basically tests, but they refuse to admit. Also, we do ahve to take major exams like PSATs in junior year, and constantly doing online tests and blah blah.

But is called project based learning,so we basically had to do fucking projects everry semester ed benchmarks. Not only did we have to do benchmarks but they gave us even more projects on top of the over all big projects,, and we had to do some shitty science project at the end and present it to a bunch of scientists for like 3 hours at the end of the year.

One of the worst things was the group work. Working with other classmates was a major difficulty when you are an individualist in a school that is so collectivist to a point where you are ridiculously standing out and noticed.
Group work with stupid assholes? Group work didn't work because 1) Unless everyone is on the same intellectual and creative level it's just not gonna work.2) Secondly, being put with people that you just can't look at for 30 seconds without laughing.3) There is never any equality. Some asshole always becomes boss and it becomes ther pretentious and haughty vision, instead of everyone elses.4) Everybody is stupid!

I'll give you an example. My first project in Algebra I was put with my friend and some guy. All we ended up doing was laughing because we couldn't take it seriously and we had no idea what the fuck was going on. The guy never came to fuckign school so we were like wtf. And then he shows up and he wants to take over the group and erase my name and say I didn't do anything. And then during the presentation we all just start laughing, and then at the end our teacher is mad as hell and we get a speech about how we totally fucked up and blah blah were gonna fail, shes dissapointed blah the fuck blah.
ONe of my last projects in history we all seemed to be working together greatly, but then this super narcisstic girl starts telling us what to do and becomes our fucking dictator and our teacher pats her on the fucking back for take leadership, wtf. BUt anway so I'm like whatever if this bitch wants to manage shit then go ahead, so she tells us to send all our work that we've been doing to a google doc to present. And then when we present we find out that shes erased and manipulated all of our goddamn work, and basically compacted the project into a complete pile of off topic self centered bullshit, and she doesn't even let us talk the entire time. It basically becomes her fucking project.

BUt what the fuck, regardless of how retarded the students are, my only friend who was generally outcasted and called the "creepy guy" because he spent time alone and really hated everything, was constantly bullied and targeted by the staff. He became a problem child, defiant, and in danger of failing shit. My friend likes to mumble to himself somtimes and everybody made rumors about him threatening to shoot up school, and he just got in even deeper shit for that. Also he told the Principal that he wasnt the only person who talked to hisself and then the Principal says " You're LYING! You're lying to me!". ANd he gets suspended for like a week for "play" choking is friend who was obviously consenting, but some dumb retarded south philly bitch ratted him out and like all this really retarded shit that makes me angry as hell happened and its just a mess.

The staff being generally retarded, the principal being batshit insane, he has a very short temper. I've gotten suspended for three days for drawing on a pole but not even serious just a marking, he freaked out and called my father even though I said I'm sorry and to just suspend me and that made him VERY fucking angry because I wasn't cowarding in fear.

The only good thing about it was that we had 45 minute lunches, and on Wedsndays you could cut school and not get caught because it was half days where we are supposed to go to the Franklin INstitute and suck cock, but alll the upper classmen leave for volunteering programs and you could easily sneak out with thtem. Also since it was a small school filled with elitist nerds, hipsters, mainstream idiots, smart ghetto kids, and poseurs there wasn't that much supervision. We had cops that sat in the hall and at the door, but we didn't have metal detectors at least. They say they gave us a lot of freedom but really that's your basic high school freedom. We couldn't even go out for lunch.

But either way, my experience was terrible. The kids were complete and utter assholes, and everyone thought I was weird because I wasn't ridiculously extroverted and wasn't trendy and a follower. I hate that piece of shit school.

Project Based learning is just a more retarded version of schooling where you are set up to fail unless you are a total nimrod conformist.

Also the teachers try to be all friendly and up your ass in your buisiness. FUCK OFF, that is not going to make me love you or want to be here.

Re: Project-Based Schooling

My science class actually went project based. It was nice though. Mrs. Brammar basically said screw the regulations, and gave us all these really cool projects to do solo.

People say the problem with me is I have psychotic tendencies and care not about other human beings I don't like and or know. So?

Not to mention, we had classses where it was basically free periods where we they want us to do work freely, but we still ended up doing nothing.

Basically homeroom or advisory?

Nah, it was just easy to skip class and blend in with the lunch band, but then when I think about it we didn't have a lot of freddom, the only thing was the labtop concept. Which gave you the opportunity to fail everything because you are secretly playing minecraft all the time.
