RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

Ok, I may have gone too far

ok in this post i need advice on a couple of things, because if i'm honest otherwise i'm going to be in DEEP trouble.
ok, the first problem. well at school as i'm underachieving and refusing to work in a lot of lessons, and as i used to be a perfect student the teachers are getting concerned and i'm really close to being put on counselling, i already have to speak to a careers counellor person from connextions. I think it's nice that they care but i really can't get put on counselling, knowing the school counsellors i'll get diognosed with a bunch of disorders that i don't have! so first of all i need help getting out of that situation.
The next thing is that in my biology class (one of the lessons that i don't really work in) i've really pissed of the teacher and he's going to get me in a lot of trouble. ok- well admittedly it was kind of my fault and i recognise that you see i hadn't done the work and he told me he would give me a caution, but then he remembered he could give me a detention for that and he started debating this infront of me- now this is something i can't stand so i told him to give me the detention i didn't give a damn i have a new book i want to read anyway. now after that 'incident' he's been really off with me and i need to get back on his good side, otherwise he'll report me to my head of year and i'll be in even more trouble. any tips??

Mate, protesting in school is not easy. You can't just make a switch from being a consistent worker to not doing anything at all simply because of your changed views.

Well, you can, but look where this has got you. If you do not do the work, don't make it obvious. The trick is to get by by doing the least amount possible.

About your biology teacher, it is hard to maintain a good relationship with a teacher once they have a bad opinion of you. A 'good' (school good) student can be any teachers' [I need apostrophy training] pet, one misunderstanding can switch everything round.

Looking at it in a wider view, your relationship with this one teacher shouldn't have much of an effect on you - most of us here have this for the majority of our classes. If it is indeed only one teacher, your counsellor won't see it as much of a problem, most commonly a misunderstanding. If it was more than one teacher your attitude ect would probably monitored.

Sorry for my bad english I need sleep.

Just don't do your work, but act normal and politely. If they label you with disorders, you have the right to get a second opinion from a specialist.

Problem, officer?

Exactly. I haven't done a math homework assignment all year. The teacher get's angry but I just act like I don't know why. After a while, the teacher got used to me not doing anything. I once heard someone say, "don't argue with an idiot." I throughly believe you cannot change an idiots mind with any amount of reason. Also, even if you do win an argument with a teacher it's not likely to change anything for the better. I do it for fun sometimes but in the long run it's never actually helped me. It could spark some interest in classmates though, and that's good.

Hmm. You know, Einstein often arrived to class in his pajamas because his brilliant mind was so occupied with greater matters that he forgot to change. So, like Einstein, you forget to do your work because your mind is occupied with greater matters. ... Okay, it may be too late to get them to adopt that image of you, but... meh. You could try to slip under the radar and whenever busted, just play the OMG I FORGOT card... that's what I always did. Act as disorganized as possible and all that.
