RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

I'd like to see the giant library idea, with experts in various fields there to help you if you need it.

I'd also like to see books which give a more clear understanding of what you should know before trying to learn the book's contents. For example: "To completely understand this book, you should know about X, Y, and Z. You can find that information in book A, B, and C.

Freedom... with their exception.

Ah, they may have the capacity and potential to understand it, but they are already have been indoctrinated long enough not to try to accept the truth as it is.

Get rid of holding back. It is the biggest waste of time ever. The only way you should be held back is if you get 0's the whole entire year.

Re: How do YOU propose K-12 education should be changed?

I would make schools more like places where kids can actually learn and not be forced to sit down and listen to useless shit. Like what everyone said, become more like libraries/ community centers and less like prisons. Everyone learns differently and has different interests. Rules like zero tolerance and restricting basic needs (food, water, bathroom) need to go too. All schools do is treat everyone like animals, thinking they're all the same and giving them limited freedom.

Why do the grade levels exist? They shouldn't. There shouldn't be anything to pass on to or get held back from.

Re: How do YOU propose K-12 education should be changed?

The community center idea is a great idea, but like other people said, it can't be sustained. Let me clarify. There would be no order. With kids going as well as treating the place like crap, it can't be done. I highly doubt kids would go there. They would rather have fun. I've seen it. Even with the given right to learn whatever they want, they get bored and want to play and talk.

That system can't support our infrastructure. If kids learn at their time, we won't have adequate workers. Why?

*Things would fall apart since little to no one would want to pursue that field

* No one knows how its done

* Not enough trained professionals

*It would take more time to train them

In that system, our society would collapse due to inadequate professionals who take too long to learn on their own time.

That's why I prefer the current method. Its more reliable.

Well, I've never bothered to check. And I'm guessing you haven't either. Who cares? Is being 'professional' more important than being happy?

PS: High school doesn't "produce" professionals, because most 'professionals' tend to get degrees in college/university before being considered 'professional'. High school is just one way of getting into college/uni. There are others. Oh btw, did you know that many colleges prefer homeschoolers?

Yeah, I think schools would be better off as library like places, sort of like colleges where you have all the resources you need.
