RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Even if you're right - you're wrong.

My girlfriend today was telling me about how she got a test back today and she had a question marked wrong. The problem is, the answer was perfectly correct - though it wasn't what was on the teacher's answer key so it was marked wrong. Questions that can have multiple possible answers should NOT be graded with an answer key.

This only further proves how useless many teachers are. I often question if a teacher really knows anything about the subject they're teaching, since all they have to do is tell the class what's in the book. Ever seen a teacher get asked a question, and s/he has to look up the answer? I have.

In nearly every profession, you have to actually know something to perform your duties. In teaching, you don't have to know anything. Ironic, eh?

Happens to me all the time.

I've had to pass six different certification exams to get all my certifications. A lot of people can't pass those tests. It doesn't mean I know everything about all the subjects I can legally teach but I had to know something.

Re: Even if you're right - you're wrong.

They should at the very least know nearly everything about the subject they're teaching - at level they're teaching it. I understand it's a bit illogical to believe anyone could learn everything about every subject, but if you're teaching it, you should know what you're talking about.

As a comparison, a brain doctor may not know absolutely everything about brain surgery, but you can be sure they will make sure they learn it to a level that they should be able to quickly answer nearly any question about brain surgery. Just like a teacher should be able to answer nearly every question about the subject they're teaching.

Often times, I've had to correct a teacher's mistake. They don't seem to like that, but if a teacher is going to teach us mostly useless information, I'm going to make damn sure that to best of my knowledge, the students are learning the actual facts about the subject.

Yep. Neurosurgeons are smarter. Sorry if we're not living up to your expectations. I would suggest that teachers make an equivalent pay grade but then I wouldn't be competitive enough to be able to keep my teaching post.

Not to mention substitute teachers stroll in and teach perfectly fine. The only problem they have is power related. Sometimes in math or Spanish or French they'll have a bit of trouble but usually they can cover the topics easily.

What is ridiculous here is the hipocrisy. A teacher isn't required to memorize what students are forced to.

I've never given a test that even came close to my subject area certification exams. They were also much harder than any tests I took in college.
