RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

My epic, successful (kinda) skipping of a whole school day.

Every Wednesday we have this shit called Excel, where year 9s go to classes to another campus and kinda travel around doing pointless bullshit. The fact that we don't have to go to school to get checked for attendance makes it super easy to skip.

Last Wednesday me and two friends took advantage of that fact.

It panned out like this:

So I meet up with Jake (not real name) and Matt (not real name) near the school, then head out. We are supposed to take the tram to the other campus, but I advise my friends to walk in case we run into other kids. We walk and talk for a long while, then see a Mcdonalds. We go in, they eat, I didn't feel like eating. We then left to go to our local shopping center, so we leave and go on the tram going back the way we came.

We then get off, while my friends tell me to go and take the bus to the center. I say it would look pretty suspicious wearing uniform. So I walk calmy the whole way, while they moan and groan about walking a little bit. While we walk into the car park, I see security guards circulating around the lobby. I tell my partners in crime to not take the risk and just lay low. After a bit of manipulation, they agree and we cross the street.

We go into another Mcdonalds and they eat, I don't. We see the time, 10:49. We go into a JB HI FI and look at some games, get bored and walk around an oval behind the strip mall. I eat some biscuits and we walk a long way through random suburbs. We have no idea where we are. At all.

My friend says he knows a local milk bar near his house, in another town. So we go onto yet another tram and head there. We enter the shop and we buy some sodas. Matt unsurprisingly spots a "naughty" magazine and asks the counter lady if he could buy it. We leave with soda only.

We drink in a park with our weary, tired legs like drunks. I do a number 1 in the bushes.

Then the shit hits the fan. As we go onto the tram back towards our local town, Jake gasps. All of the year 9s and teachers are at the tram stop.

DO NOT WANT

I'm fearing the worse, I glance at the window and see them smiling and pointing. We over dramatically duck while the other passengers look at us with quizicle faces. The tram stop is right next to the tram depot, another tram is on the other side of wherethe doorsopen and we SPRINT out the opposite side were the kids are entering. As we sprint in between the parked trams we hear people yelling hey and some tram workers ask with a raised voice what we are doing off bounds. I keep on running with a smile, realising how this is so cinematic. We hide behind the cars in the parking lot and wait for them to get on and leave.

We walk out and walk towards another park I know of. After that we sit on some benches and talk. We also find a dvd cover of a XXX movie. Jake literally takes the picture and goes to the toilet stall with it. Wow.

Then we stay there and wait 'till 2:30 (which is the time excel sometimes might finish) to go home. I haven't gone to school since that day, I faked sick those other days.

I will find out if we got caught or not Monday, or one of us ratted.

Re: My epic, successful (kinda) skipping of a whole school day.

Keep it up, eventually you'll master the art of truant.

My school had recently added an automated sign in/out system at the office in my last few years, and I found that if I used it to sign out early then your name doesn't get flagged as a truant for missing classes. So all I had to do was quickly go in the office, sign out, and GTFO smoothly and quickly. I was able to skip countless classes without any of the admin/deputies etc noticing, and I had a sign out slip to show any teachers spotting me leaving.

So you'll eventually become a master at truanting, lol, and when you're over the school leaving age you wont have to worry about being spotted by cops or truant officers because they can't legally force you to go back to school.

I still win for living so close to any school I even had that I can always be seen as going or returning, unless someone snooped and saw me going to school... twice a day? Laugh

Problem, officer?

Re: My epic, successful (kinda) skipping of a whole school day.

I'm home nao, and can report that somehow (didn't say how) Matt was caught and Jake wasn't. I wasn't asked by teachers what had happen so it's cool!

Thanks to everyone who replied without "Cool story bro", I was fearing that.

Also, I didn't steal a motorcycle but I do sense a mild reference to the Great Escape (awesome film).

Just a small update:

Jake's parents were rang by the school and told he was caught skipping. I'm the only who hasn't been caught out yet, but I think they might doing this one person at a time.

The walls are closing in, man.
