RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Why do governments still support school today??

See
http://www.school-survival.net/articles ... t_Fine.php
for more information.

According to the article in the website above, the idea of compulsory education today actually started in Prussia rather than America. The 'education' there was designed to unite the Prussians for another war. Then patriotic Americans went to Prussia and used that idea in America.

Implicitly (not from that website), other countries took that idea and used that for our 'education' system today.

So, why do developed country governments still enforce compulsory education today, even when government officials don't demand patriotism? I'll leave that for you to answer.

Sorry for not giving enough information.

Anyway, why do developed country governments still enforce compulsory education today, even if government officials don't demand an abundance of resources, a good education or a strong economy?

Tradition.

Also, people don't think there are alternatives.

Anything that ever happened or will... one condition, it has to be amazing.

Ceiling cat beat us to it.

Thats why big business are such big supporters of public schools.

School kills the indepedence(Which may enable more businesses or more competition) and lays out a blue print that if they listen and follow orders that they will be happy.

That indirectly relates to what I said (good point though) because obedient workers boost the economy and increases the resources of the country the worker is in. Also, obedient workers are docile enough to give their conscious support to the country they live in.

Re: Why do governments still support school today??

I think it's just lack of imagination. The people who go into education as a job are the ones who were teacher pleasers; people who have never had a creative thought in their head. They were never able to imagine that they could have been doing something else with their time instead of sitting in a room for half the day learning at 1% the rate they could if they were offered real education instead.

Every time some eight-year-old passes an exam for people twice as old, he gets labelled as a child genius and no one ever stops to ask how he acquired his knowledge. The reality is that gifted children of that sort are just normal children who are given the opportunity to learn using fully efficient methods. Most children could do the same.

Amen to this Mr Cooper.

Sometimes I like to think what potential kids and eventually leading up to general humanity would have if they were allowed freedom in their education and actually treated like people with their own minds instead of people who shouldn't have any responsibility because of their age.

Re: Why do governments still support school today??

The schools aren't supported by the government.
The schools are a branch of the government.
Why doesn't the government prune itself?
Well, because. Viruses live to spread.
