RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Attendance and 'Truanting'

How many of you at this point "just don't give a shit about school?"
And by this I mean, you don't let it worry you or if it becomes a concern you realise it shouldn't be.

I'd like to say that. But the problem is my attendance (although defintely not the worst) isn't too great. It's at 88% for this year, and with 3 months left of school I can almost garuntee that I will be 'missing' days in that time.
I know my friend with an attendance bordering 70% to late 60%. And yes he gets warned, and still doesn't seem to care. As he is eveidently taking off more days than me. He seems to be in denial that his attendance is as low as it is. This is quite honestly true that he averages 1 day off a week at least. (I of course don't see the problem but the school does :/)

It's the final year. It's almost coming to an end, and I can't give a solitary sh!t.
But my problem is that my dad thinks my attendance is quite bad, and the school will probably get on my @ss when it dips more. Meh. I'm still going to take days off.
School is not worth the stress.

Anyone else in a similar predicament?
Or have a 'diabolical' attendance (according to the school)?
Anyone truant, and yet their attendance seems to be good?

My attendance is... well, I don't give a fuck. Just enough to let me pass.

Problem, officer?

Re: Attendance and 'Truanting'

There was one class in my last year of normal high school (grade eleven) that I went to twice. I skipped about 3/4 of my English class that year... Took a few days off every couple weeks... Hmm.. This was two years ago now, so I don't remember too well. All I remember is whenever I was called into the office I would tell them I sincerely couldn't care less about going to class. Then they would suspend me, and I got even more time off. I failed that year.

But it was very difficult to get into a state of mind where I really didn't care what they did anymore.

My attendance is almost 100%, I just have nowhere to go, my mom is always at the house. It's destroying me, I'm always too tired to do anything

Re: Attendance and 'Truanting'

If I were still having to be in school, I would feel like that, I would never go. I wish I could go back in time and do that and just drop out of school at like age 6.

Re: Attendance and 'Truanting'

Since I'm in year 11 of school, I might as well stick it out. Supposedly I have pretty good attendance, though I purposely took 4 days off from school just to travel with my mom somewhere. She doesn't generally care about my grades as long as I'm passing, and I can honestly say that week off from school taught me more about life than my entire junior year. I learned how to deal with drunk people, which clubs to go to, some history, how to truly appreciate different cultures, and other fun lessons.

By the way, my school has strict rules regarding truancy. We are not allowed more than 9 days of absence a semester, and that's even if the absences are excused. If we surpass those days, we have to go to summer school just to get some stupid-ass credits and fulfill attendance requirements, even if we do the work ahead of time.

And a friend of mine who graduate last year went to court for truancy several times. Why? Because her mother was ill, her step-father was too lazy to look for work, and her brother was in jail. She needed to work to support the family, but according to society, she's avoiding her main priorities. Fuck them all, she's a good person.

This exactly.

Even if I could miss school.
10 days = fail for a semester class.
20 days = fail for year regardless of class.

Re: Attendance and 'Truanting'

I didn't get credit for a class that I had an A in because I was absent 11 times and the limit is 9.

Re: Attendance and 'Truanting'

Yesterday there was some "international food festival shit" where you had to pay and was crowded as fuck. It took the last 2 hours and they did not want us to go, even though Tuesday, the usual short day, was longer than normal.
They said that if they saw anyone trying to get out the person could be charged with truancy, which means something like a $500 ticket. I almost regret not organizing something just to get out without listening to the faggots, but NO FUCKING ONE of the herd complained. None of my "friends". Ah, damn it

Re: Attendance and 'Truanting'

The pep rallies at my school are required. We must attend when they are schedules, which is usually during last period. The only good thing about them is that we don't have to go to our last class. The bad thing? They're mandatory. But if they weren't, no one in my small school would show up and watch the untalented cheerleaders dance like whores while the sports teams get more recognition and funding they don't fucking need.

I take at least one day off a week.

I really just don't see the point in going.

Just don't go in the morning. Don't make a secret of it. Tell them you're not going.

If and when they beat you, call CPS.

Rage levels rising.

Truancy and attendance policies are bullshit, if you ask me. If you honestly need a personal day, are sick, or have to help out at home, or similar things in general, who's the school to stop you?

My Sophmore year, I didn't go to class every so often; usually I'd come in late in the mornings to avoid my first period, which I currently can't remember what it was for the life of me, but obviously it was something I didn't care for. Typically I wouldn't go beyond missing third period in a day. A couple times I came into school so late, I only attended seventh period, but that was totally unintentional as I'd either slept in too late (stress can make you sleep long times), or I wasn't feeling good and at least wanted to see one of the teachers I actually liked and learned from.

Now, the funny part about my attendance in Sophmore year was that, despite being 16 and therefore the legal age of being able to leave school on one's own accord (which I really should've pushed harder for, I admit), the school still hassled me for my attendance. I didn't think it was worth it to spend time explaining the obvious legal bits to them.

Junior year, I didn't give two shits, ESPECIALLY in the second semester (when crap was, well... utter crap). If I wanted to stay home or had to for some reason or another, fuck you, I stayed home. I missed quite a lot of classes, particularly my first period with my ignorant (but cool outside the classroom, unless he brought up school), cross-eyed teacher. My truancy record went through the roof, and unsurprisingly enough, they didn't put me on that attendance contract; guess it got through their thick skulls that I could legally LEAVE THIS HELLHOLE whenever I pleased, so it wouldn't do them any good to try forcing a signature, especially when (and they didn't know this, I don't think) I would've taken said contract in my hands, looked it over for no more than three seconds, then proceeded to shred it.

So yeah. Attendance policies don't fly with me.
