RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017
The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.
If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.
To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.
I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.
I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.
I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.
I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.
Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.
Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

Ageist car ads?
I just saw a Hyundai commercial that showed someone playing a racing video game and crashing into everything, and then the voiceover said "X number of teen drivers will be on the road with you this year. Get a safe car with the new...". It makes me angry that blatant ageism like that is just accepted without a second thought in today's society.

Re: Ageist car ads?
I've seen a few stereotyping commercials in the past that label teens as destructive, violent, crazy, etc. and it annoys me too. With advertisements, stereotypes are commonplace to use, however. In the past some commercials were focused on male-dominance, now ads make men look stupid while their wives go do whatever.
Slightly off topic, Charlie Brooker had a funny and informational episode from one of his shows on criticizing advertising guidelines (particular part was http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NvXj6WMPMZM but you need to be logged in to see it ). If you don't know who he is, watch some of his episodes, you'll love 'em. He criticizes just about everything we hate about TV and the news.

Re: Ageist car ads?
There are quite a few fuckheads at my school who completely reinforce the stereotype. One guy bragged about how he went 80 in a 35 zone without a seatbelt and almost crashed; another was bragging about how he managed to get to 110 on the highway. They ruin everything for people who aren't total dumbasses.

Eh? It's probably statistically proven Teens have a higher chance of crashing.
What's not taken into account is why, and that is because of inexperience, raising age limits would do no good.

Re: Ageist car ads?
Not to mention the Insurance company can give young males high insurance rates because they are young.

It's also statistically proven that female drivers have more accidents per million miles than men. Should we let ads say that women aren't safe drivers?

Re: Ageist car ads?
Car Insurance is also ageist. The rates for teens/young people are very high, and even higher if you're a boy.

Indeed.
I realized how full of shit people are when my mom tried to actually justify the already crooked insurance companies being sexist and ageist.
