RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Gum and school

This rule seems to have been around for decades. No gum in school. The reason being some of us have been carelessly sticking under desks and on walls and so on and so forth. But why do they have to treat like illegal drugs? If we act a little more responsible with it I'm sure they will let us chew it in school. Every time a teacher at my school see's someone with a pack of gum they immediately throw it away. An entire pack! Now that's just a waste. I must admit that I chew gum during class for the sake of chewing gum during class. It doesn't stop us from doing it. It only makes us want to do it more. Is chewing gum a crime? Has anyone gotten hurt or killed from chewing gum? I don't think so. If we stopped sticking under our desks I'm sure they still wouldn't allow it in class. So what are your thoughts on the subject?

Chewing gum is a crime in Singapore.

Anything that ever happened or will... one condition, it has to be amazing.

Re: Gum and school

One thing I hate is when people spit their gum in the water fountain. That's just disgusting.

Re: Gum and school

Our admins/teachers stopped caring. But our school keeps the rule because everyone sticks it under ANYTHING they can find. I mean that loosely. I've found gum under computer equipment, on sides of walls, doors, doorhandles, desk bars, bookshelves, inside AND outside books, the list goes on. Its freakin' disgusting. Plus it seems every single person in the school does it.

In English class for example. I keep my notebook on my lap, underneath the desk top. Twice, when I've gone to pull it out, I've come out with gum stuck to it. Twice! Personally, I hate gum. I don't care if people chew it at school but I don't want people sticking it under everything.

LOLWUT

Some teachers may complain about students chewing gum, but that's about it. Also, fuck Singapore.

I'm rather meh about that. My school only has one working water fountain anyway, the rest are for decoration or something.

Re: Gum and school

Call me insane, whatever, I know I am, but I always get really annoyed when people chew anything that makes a sound near me, so I never personally cared for that rule, but still I find it oppressive.
(I've never complained outside of my family, though)

Re: Gum and school

I must say, those who stick gum in places students are bound to want to use or go to such as water fountains and books are incredibly irritating. I went to go get a drink after gym class today, and guess what was sitting right in front of my face before I started drinking? Gum, no. Not gum. Worse, some god damn snot. And there is seldom a time when I can find a water fountain without gum in it. These people are retarded.

Disgusting.
Who even thinks about shooting snot into a goddamn water fountain?
Let alone gum.

Although, not being able to chew gum is not the solution. It has not improved the gum situation.

Re: Gum and school

Well I guess gum in school isn't really something that anybody worries about. Yes I am also disgusted by all the gum in the fountains and under desks. Its just plain disgusting.

Re: Gum and school

They let me chew gum in my school. It's an alternative school, so that's why. I think the whole rule about gum is fucking stupid, though. Poop

Re: Gum and school

As long as people use fucking trash cans for it like I do, then I see no reason why people can't chew it.

Re: Gum and school

Fuck...Whoever stuck gum under the tables in my school should have been shot years ago, I can see why teachers prohibit gum its due to the general apathy of students who are too fucking lazy to either swallow the gum or to actually put it in the bin -.-, I chew it anyway It tastes brilliant.
