RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

college...a place with false promises

When i was nearing the end of highschool we got talked to about college, we were told it is nothing like school...they were right, it's worse the lecturers talk more bullshit, they treat you like shit and even make threats in some cases. Of course it's possible to quit college but my parents think im just being dramatic again but i dont think that bein forced to do 3 courses worth of work in 1 course is normal. The system is more fucked than ever, i made a complaint about being threatened by a lecturer and they just blew it off and told me off for lying! and when i was out of town during the holidays when apparently i was supposed to come in they gave me a disciplinary (3 of these and you're out). So yeah i don't know what to do anymore thanks to this course i have lost my passion for ICT and i'm back where i was a year ago listening to my own thoughts and wishing i could get out of here. Bit of a rant but thanks for reading anyway.

The game is drawing to a close so it looks as good a time as any to ask the final question:
What does the future hold for us?
Bring it down to ask for the coming back! if the kids are united!

Wienie alert! You sound like an absolute infant.

My parents??? You're in college! That means you're grown. Big surprise you have to go to lectures in college! It's pitifully obvious you live your life like a baby and continue to live off of your parents and then complain when everything isn't exactly how you want it to be. In compulsory school I would have some sympathy but if you were my student in college I would laugh in your pathetic childish face. Go get a job and take care of yourself if you don't like it.

If you want to be a different fish, you've got to jump out of the school.

It's common knowledge that college is mostly a scam unless you want to be a scientist/doctor/lawyer.

If you really feel like the workload is too much, then you should consider changing your major to something you really enjoy. I can tell you from personal experience that it can make an incredible difference.

I've said that here a few times already.

I do have something productive say. Quit whining to your professors and your parents. You claim a lecturer 'threatened' you? :waah:

College is haaaaard! :waah: I'm gonna go tell my mommy!!! You sound like a spoiled mama's boy six grader. Like the others say, if you can't hack it do something else. If you complain that your classes are too hard of course people are going to laugh at you.

If you want to be a different fish, you've got to jump out of the school.

I can't help but think that there was a better way to respond than mockery.

As much as I hate to be the kind who mocks, I'd have to agree that there is better way than simply whining. One of them is to take a step above their level, prove something, and standing up.

HEY!

How 'bout instead of snap-jawwin' at someone who called you on your bullshit, do the fucking research. BAWW, lectures. BAWW, they treat me like shit. BAWWW.

Motherfucker, shut up!

This is college. This is not high school. They don't pick and choose your classes for you. As an adult, or at least a college student, you have the responsibility of picking your classes. If it's bad for me, it's your fault.

Re: college...a place with false promises

Umm...OP, I may not be a college student, but I'm pretty sure you don't have to be there. If you hate your classes, change them. Who's stopping you? Or change colleges, if possible. If not, find classes with different professors that don't treat you like shit if reporting the assholes that "teach" you isn't working. And really, could you please use proper grammar? Even if you're not learning anything in college, you should've at least learned basic English. That's a huge pet peeve of mine-people who can't form their thoughts into legible sentences that make sense.

Since college is optional, though, and you find it really isn't for you, quit. Seriously, find a job or something to support yourself and take responsibility for your life, since you're supposedly an adult.

Off topic: Unless you're paying your own way through college (this is not directed at the OP, but for everyone who tells me "College teaches independence!"), you are not independent. Sure, you live away from mommy and daddy in most cases, but if they're still supporting your ass financially, you're not independent. If they have to take out a second mortgage to support your partying lifestyle and tell you not to waste their thousands of dollars on pointless activities, you are not mature. College does not grant you a sense of maturity, and it does not entitle you to respect.

I actually agree with those that say stop whining, I bet the OP is fully financially supported by his/her parents.

Why are you even in college? Because your parents forced you to go? Because you gave into society's pressures?

Eh, if your parents are paying for it, that's basically 4 years where you can just fuck around and have lots of free time for other things. Irresponsible? Probably. Am I doing it anyway? Fuck yeah.

Re: college...a place with false promises

I like most of college.

It's true, sometimes hard work sucks. Or a class with a teacher who has a particularly incompatible teaching style with my learning style.

But that's why you research the classes and ask around about all the teachers. And yeah, you may need to just switch your major up. Or suck it up. Unlike high school, college is very optional and you can take your pick of them.

Let's do the time warp again!

Re: college...a place with false promises

Something about TheCancer's response really pissed me off. Probably because I didn't really become properly independant until I was 26 years old. And that's because I've lived a pretty sheltered life and have been too shit-scared to do pretty much anything on my own. It took me a loooong time to outgrow that.

So, I can understand that it's not just a simple case of "quit whining and get a job if you don't like it", because let's face it: most jobs are shit. I'd much rather live with my parents than have a typical 9-5 job. Laugh

Anyway, it sounds like a case of false advertising: this college didn't turn out like you thought it would. So... what can you do about it? You are over 18, right? So in theory you can change classes/colleges yourself without your parents' permission, right?
