RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Why stop with clothing? Let's ban skin too. There's always the potential that someone could hide a knife in a cavity.

Skin wouldn't do jackshit to prevent people hiding knives in their cavities, banning humans is the right thing to do there.

This. Muslim women were founding universities back when European women were getting burned at the stake for having Godless heathen boobs.

I am very interested in this subject -- got any article to share?

And if things were going on so well back then in the Muslim world, how come the present is so horrid?

Well, according to the Islamic calendar, it's the year 1431. We were still burning witches and doing other fucked-up shit at that time.

Well, civilizations change. As Europe rose, the Muslim world declined. Right now most of the Middle East is in its own Dark Age while the West is on top, but it used to be the opposite. Remember that the Muslims were right on the main trade routes between Europe and Asia (the Silk Road, etc.) so they were exposed to ideas and technology from both cultures, and made a lot of money by taxing traders, creating a prosperous and relatively tolerant society, at least by the standards of the time. They invented algebra (originally al-Jabr) and created what many historians recognize as the first universities. Even their slaves were treated better than the ones in Europe (killing a slave was still considered killing a human being, and slaves could work their way to freedom).
The fanatical Jihadism we see now is mostly a disproportionate backlash against the West. People in the Middle East were pissed off about certain examples of Europe's interference in their homeland (hint: it rhymes with "Jisrael"), and crazy fundamentalists like the Taliban were more than willing to take advantage of it the anger and turn it into a crusade against any signs of 20th-century progress.

Basically, the Islamic extremists were just like the Jesus Camp people, except their audience was a subcontinent full of angry guys with guns, while the Evangelicals had a few community centers full of fat Americans.

If they were open to new technology in the Middle Ages, why aren't they so open-minded now? Do they disregard progress solely because people invaded them?

No, I got that. I'm saying they should get out of it. They have limited resources. We can't give them resources, because they might make weapons. It is up to them to do what they must, but we shouldn't allow the shit they do in their own countries to go on in ours.

About half this thread is already dedicated to explaining how retarded that is. A lot of clothing obscures your features, and besides, since when are we cool with the government regulating how we dress in the interests of counter-terrorism? Hell, V for Vendetta did the exact same thing with the Guy Fawkes masks.

Islam would be better off if it was still like the middle ages. They were inventing shit left and right at this time, and were pretty peaceful. There was no sexist bullshit either. It was radicals that decided "OH HAI GUIZ! THIS IS HOW IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE!"

Re: Belgium bans wearing of Burqa

One thing I hate is when people assume the veiling of women in Islam is a symbol of oppression against women. The veil is a symbol of modesty; the Qur'an says, essentially, that women should be modest. Technically, it also says men should be modest as well.

And another thing: a jihad is not a synonym for an Islamic holy war. Jihad is the struggle to maintain a purely Islamic lifestyle. Like, for example, the Qur'an forbids the consumption of alcohol. If you're an alcoholic and you're Muslim, your jihad would be to refrain from drinking alcohol.

well, it kinda is. but we're talking about women who wear burqas voluntarily.

BTW, come to think of it, committing a crime while wearing one would be really hard. If the thing slips, it could cover your eyes, and you would probably trip on it during the getaway.

Re: Belgium bans wearing of Burqa

If someone is being forced to wear a burqa, they shouldn't have to - but the point of this law is NOT to fix that problem. it's POINT is that people who wear them are a risk to security - which is pretty damned racist, by the way - and therefore NOBODY should be allowed to wear them! It's really counterproductive, because although some peoples' rights will be restored, others' will be taken away.

Also, if Belgium ban them, then there's bound to be some people who then wrongly associate burqas with terrorism, and then the racism/anti Muslim shit starts. And it won't be so pretty.
