RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Re: Atheist

You're some bullshit religion like Buddhism.

"Troll" is a common defense mechanism. If someone disagrees with you, the immediate reaction is "lol troll." You can't just jump to that conclusion because you want to be victimized, however.

Granted, sometimes you are being trolled.

Sometimes you're just wrong.

Re: Atheist

Why does it always have to be one or the other extreme? Christian -> Atheist. There are like sooo many levels of ambiguity inbetween. I don't believe in religion, but I seriously think there's some kind of supernatural spiritual stuff going on out there. Might even be something you could call a "God" if you wanted. Maybe that's what all the religions are based on anyway. Shrug

Revivals are fucking weird. I went to one this one time, and mother fuckers were saying they were seeing shit on the walls, and people were yelling at each other, and all kinds of other African voodoo shit. I'm never getting near another one of those, ever again. Uhoh

I don't know if atheism is THE TRUTH, but it seems to be the most logical and beleiveable. I think lots of people on this site as well fairly non-religious.

Like what? What makes you think that?

Go to work. Send your kids to school. Follow fashion. Act normal. Walk on the pavement. Watch TV. Save for your old age. Obey the law. Repeat after me: "I am free."

Well, I cannot conclusively say there is no God because the nature of it is that the idea of God is untestable. But if I had to bet all my money, or even my life, I would say there isn't one.
Thus, I consider myself an Atheist. It's my best guess.

All kinds of stuff that's happened to me. Like knowing what's going to happen next, and actually being right. Like being depressed about something for a long long time, and then when I finally work up the guts to take one small step and attempt to do one small thing to fix it, it suddenly and miraculously fixes itself. All of these things and similar weird shit has happened so many times I can't write it off as coincidence anymore. I also think this doesn't happen to everyone, because a lot of people just aren't open to shit like that, therefore it won't happen to them... or if it does, it happens rarely enough that they can just write it off as pure chance. Yeah, this probably sounds insane from a logic standpoint. Whatever. Life is weird. Razz

Re: Atheist

Just like everything else in life. Razz

EDIT: How is that really any different from you being an atheist, or your family being christian? People will believe whatever they want and then they'll find supporting evidence for it... or find a lack of supporting evidence if that's what they need to stop believing something they don't want to believe deep down.

So maybe everything is true, and everyone is right. We can't prove it. So why the hell not? Would sure make life more interesting... Scratchchin

I have no evidence to disprove God, but I have no evidence to prove that there isn't a tea cup on the surface of a planet orbiting Alpha Centauri either.
See what I'm getting at?

And if people want to believe, fine by me. Heck, I want to believe. But I also want proof, something to justify belief that isn't just some feeling I can attribute to my nerves or irrationality.

For the record, I believe people can perceive reality differently, but there is an objective reality outside of us. People who do not perceive things close enough to reality can't function right, like schizophrenics.

Re: Atheist

What if the objective reality is that reality is actually subjective? xD

Yeah, I'm weird. I find 'cold hard facts' terribly boring. I'm much more interested in exploring other possibilities, even ludicrous ones. Makes life a lot more interesting. I don't really care what anyone else believes, but I'm gonna treat life like a giant RPG game, maybe a bit like the Matrix in a sense, where anything is possible if you can just figure out how to do it.

I mean, it's not like life is permanent or anything.

I find there are numerous possibilities in reality without wondering about things I ultimately cannot know.

I don't think people can perceive reality differently, in my opinion. Rather, people are led to believe "something is out there, something beyond this universe" because it fills that lack of understanding of the universe. I also believe they perceive different reality based on fallacies and biases.

Everything we know contains some mistake in it. Hell, we could be wrong about everything we know.

There is a paradox in the statement because, if we agree that there is no such thing as absolute truth, then stating that there is no such thing as absolute truth violates itself.

Thus, I believe in absolute truth.

But if that is so, then the theory that our discoveries and results aren't 100% correct is incorrect. Therefore, there will be exceptions to the rule and there will be 100% correct pieces of knowledge.
