RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Game Development

So, people. The thread name obviously says what I'm gonna ramble about now.

Many hardcore gamers probably have their own brilliant ideas on games, as they know better than anyone else what makes a game good. Sadly, most people think that all these today's HD graphics and stuff was all hardcoded and including inhumane efforts of thousands of people - even if that's the case, you should know it's not that hard anymore.
Nobody creates a game from scratch these days - we have engines, and object oriented design was made specifically to reuse other people's work so you never have to reinvent the wheel again. You don't need to know how hardware works anymore to have your machine display some eyecandy comparable to what lies on shelves in game stores with a fat price tag.
You might probably ask, why do I bring this up? Because here's the best part - in this industry, nobody gives a flying fuck about your 'education' or age. You might as well shove up that college degree up your ass if you have no skills. And nobody can teach you any form of art besides yourself. So, where to start?
The first thing you'd probably need to find out if you want to get into the stuff, is what are you good at. Just list out anything, whether it's art, writing, music, maths, architecture, or even gaming itself - just about any bit of knowledge will do here. Based on that, you can decide what will you do in the industry, as nothing is created by one person these days.
Once you know what do you want to do, you should try doing something in that direction. The best way to get a taste of game development, is to get into modding existing games - whether it means creating a mod for an engine designed for it, or working on an online game's private server, or even romhacking - just anything that's served ready for you only to put your work in. If you want to try modelling, learn to use a 3D package and swap models in games. If you're an aspiring level designer, you might want to try out the map editor for your favorite game. If you're into coding, try out a 3D engine and play around with it. If you're a 2D artist, make some concept art or sprites and study what does it take to be good in it. If you want to be a beta tester, you should get the knowledge of how games work and how to find and point out errors in others' work. If you want to write the storyline, do a few and look for people's feedback.
When you get the hang of your trade of choice, and find it entertaining - try creating something with others like you. This is where internet comes in handy, as you can join one of countless online game making collaborations. The best places to look for a job like this are game making communities, and the userbase of any game engine you can think of. It's best to prepare some sample work to show off and prove you're worth your salt.
I might be getting ahead of myself a little here, but if you ever want to work at a bigger game company, or perhaps start your own studio - nothing says more about you than the games you've been working on. If you're good, you'll have no problems getting a job, so make sure to create a portfolio at some point and show off your best work.

Any questions, post here and I might be able to help you figure what to do next.

Problem, officer?

Re: Game Development

I began modding Gothic lately. It's not that hard if you look in the existing scripts, which I think applies to all games (that are moddable.)

Mostly I'm looking to do stuff in the writing department, and also game design. Maybe music if I get my PC back and install FL Studio.

Re: Game Development

I already do this at home, but I've never finished anything becuase of school. If you desgin a good game, or even an ok one, it pretty much beats out all the degrees you could ever get. It looks great on a resume. I read a book on it, it had interviews with real employers that even said this.

Re: Game Development

it is that hard you faggot. I have been coding since i was 12 years old in basic, and still to this day some of the shit they do in modern game blows my fucking mind. making a game from an engine, especially by yourself, will take months or years of effort to make some probably outdated piece of shit thats glitchy beyond all reason that no one will ever play. not only that, but just about any game made in a preexisting engine is dubbed "unoriginal" and "a piece of shit"

know why? because it is. no one will ever give 2 flying fucks about anything you will ever make, unless you have modified the engine like none other (which requires knowledge of coding, which means you rage quit) and then made something very creative. Like Killing Floor creative. also, do any of you faggots know how to make your own models in blender? how about animating those models? how about texturing those models? how about bump mapping those models? how about scripting those models? how about importing those models so you can use them in game? how about scripting them without being a faggot and copying codes from the original engine? how about knowledge of how to make those models behave in a way that makes gameplay fun? how about setting up collisions for those models? how about coding? do you know anything about coding? did you copy everything you have from someone else's work? or did you go to a forum and scream out "GIMME TEH CODEZ"? because thats not making a game, thats being a faggot. Nothing you will ever make will ever come close to quality unless you dedicate years of your life to this shit.

"how come you have not made anything great Jesusauris?" well, i will tell you why. because Basic is outdated beyond all reason. everything has become a thousand times more complicated with "simpler interface" that makes it harder to get fine details down. Out of all my years programming, the highest quality thing i ever made in basic was a 2 level robot Apocalypse game that everyone just looked at and said "hey, this looks kinda like stalker"
FUCK YOU PEOPLE. I SPENT OVER A YEAR ON THAT SHIT AND NO ONE GAVE TWO SHITS ABOUT IT. YOU CAN ALL GO SUCK MY BIG THROBBING GREASY HAIRY OOZING FLAKY FOUL DIRTY MANGY DISGUSTING BLACK COCK.

Oblivion, need for speed, Arkham Asylum, Counter-Strike, a bunch of other games were made with a pre existing engine. They modified it abit yeah, but they're not completley unoriginal. Thats like saying a movie is unoriginal an uncreative becuase they filmed it in an already exsiting city, with actors which were born before the movie started being made and were in other movies, they didn't build the cameras themselves, and they didn't create the grass, mountains, and terrian that they filmed. Why create one from scrtch? Even professional developers do this. If they can't afford to make their own engine, they use another. Its the game desgin and coding (AI, gameplay, etc.) that count.

Trolololol. Lol jk. I understand how you feel. Some friends and me were working on what we thought would be a SIMPLE 2d sprite game. It took 3 years of coding before we scrapped it. The demo got 75 plays and negative reviews. I wanted to kill people that night.

RE: Game Development

It still isn't easy to make a game. But if you are good at one piece of it, like music, or artwork, do some. Get better. When you are good enough, get it out in public, via youtube, or devianart. Maybe somebody will find you. But that isn't the reason you should put it online, the reason is: people with criticize it. You'll have to learn to tell trolling (destructive critic) from honest, constructive critic ("That music would be awesome if this and this would be changed", etc)

I myself have helped a guy from an other forum once with ideas I had. Basically designed some arena combat stuff. The hard part is when the ideas stop coming. But you'll sort it out eventually.
