RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

RE: herro

FffLOL you actually moved it to blogs. Oh well.

So, I was in this reunion thing on the auditorium, and a staff member fag basically says "YOU CAN ONLY WEAR SCHOOL HATS, NOT DIFFERENT HAT, AND DON'T COME AT ME BRO SAYING THAT THIS IS A FREE COUNTRY AND YOU CAN WEAR WHAT YOU WANT, YOU ARE FREE TO FOLLOW THE RULES AND BE OBEDIENT", well, that last part was almost what he said. Pretty much.

RE: herro

A few days ago we went to a public shooting range place with BB/pellet guns. Ear and eye protection was required, so we bought safety glasses and earplugs. When we actually got to shoot... everyone around me had real guns. On the left some guy with an ARish gun, looked like an M4 carbine, to the left someone with a WInchester lever-action rifle, there were people with handguns and bolt-action rifles, and we were the only ones with... freakin' babies' toys. The guns around us were loud as fuck, so much we didn't know if we were even shooting because we couldn't hear shit and we couldn't even see what we were doing because of the tiny size of the pellets. When we were leaving someone shot while I wasn't wearing hearing protection and it fucking put a beep on my ear and sorta deafened me for a while.

RE: herro

A Christfag in my AP English class was complaining about how she was unable to pay for her AP Tests even though she qualified for a fee waiver, thus it'd only be 10 bucks total, and "10 bucks was a lot for her family" and I had to pay the full damn $174. Then she proceeded to talk about how she returned home at 11 PM because of some church bullshit. It was hard to contain myself from asking her why she didn't try to get a job instead of wasting time in church... still, guess it's none of my business, she isn't a bitch with atheists anyway.

RE: herro

In general, my experiences with FreeBSD have been fairly negative...

* Initially I had problems with ACPI and CPU frequency scaling that froze my shit and then gave me kernel panics. Apparently, FreeBSD doesn't have an initial rescue ramdisk like most Linux distributions nowadays.

* It takes much longer to boot FROM A HARD DRIVE than Arch Linux FROM A USB 2GB FLASH DRIVE

* Very shitty 3D support for ATI HD videocards. Everything runs worse than in my laptop, even though the desktop I installed it on is over 9000 times more powerful (ATI HD4850 vs nVidia 7150m integrated)

* FreeBSD needs a kernel recompile to support framebuffer consoles, and I was unable to get the sources from FreeBSD's FTP server (network was up, I was able to ping http://www.google.com) and it somehow didn't let me mount the FreeBSD DVD which contained the sources, and lagged horribly. I had to force restart. I haven't used FreeBSD since.
Maybe the FTP issues had something to do with my failed, earlier attempt to upgrade from 9-RELEASE to 9-STABLE.

...At least KDE with effects works fine...
