RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017
The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.
If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.
To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.
I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.
I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.
I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.
I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.
Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.
Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

If I ride my bike around the block in the late afternoon early evening i see an eerie phenomonom where close to 80% or up of the houses I pass are haunted by the bluish glow of their television screens and 30% convos at school are about movies or football.
When my parents took away both my internet TV and video games I literally didn't even wanna go home despite how cold concrete seems to get and not being able to drive.
\This world is so drastically differn't then it used to be, in the middle ages you could get a band of close friends together and raid a caravan carrying goods to a Vassal you didn't like, or before that you could hunt your own game with your horse and a good strong bow you made yourself.
Despite our vast advantages in food variety, and genetic handicap compensations (glasses, fake teeth, protein shakes) there is something so very restricting in the ambience of the modern age.
Walking on the sidewalk is like being forced to walk on the path that someone else made for you. I understand the benefit of roads and such but it feels so very scripted. Same with driving on roads, if you for whatever reason just want to pull to the side of the freeway and drive offroad through the canyon you'll be arrested.
Then you have a grid layout of private property where you have to walk around squares making 90 degree turns every block because of the shitton of drywall houses in the middle, do we really need all this rock and stone and steel plating everything? It reminds me of that spongebob episode where they go into the future and everything is sprayed with chrome...
What would people do if they had to walk outside (no tv or internet) and realized how little there is in terms of options? I think they would get bored, but what would happen after that?

Actually, that reminds me. I need to get better at lockpicking. I need to learn how to set traps. I need to learn how to skin things. I need to learn moar parkour. I need to learn a whole bunch of shit. But I won't. Because the Internet's more entertaining. I honestly believe that even in the middle ages it was like this. Just with different things.
They'd find ways of not getting bored, simple.
If I didn't have net and lived somewhere more civilised (and at the same time with more nature) I'd simply wander around and read books.
Let go of all desire for the common good, and the good becomes common as grass.

Perhaps there is no end.
In the middle ages people were too busy getting tortured and trying to pray the plague away. As much as modern society sucks, let's face the fact that it sucked a hell of a lot more back then. But if someone killed the internet I'd start molotoving shit, and then I'd start spray painting lolcats on walls so that memes could still survive.
I think Buenaventura Durruti is a pretty cool guy. eh kills fascists and doesnt afraid of ruins. The quickest way to kill a revolution is to wait for it.
Television can go and die in a centipede filled vagina for all I care. Internet however isn't as narrow of a concept because it's just a new way of doing things we did for centuries. It's only a way of calling all the data shared between all the computers in the world, as the capacity of a network equals the computers connected.
Problem, officer?

I'd like to do that even if the internet was still there.

Yeah, I really couldn't care less about TV. I thought I'd miss it since I don't have a TV in my dorm, but it's been kinda nice not being tied to a show's schedule. Besides, the only show I really watch anymore is the Daily Show/Colbert, and all the episodes are available online.

Eh, you can watch DVDs on a computer. And I don't think we're talking about the end of the actual machine, right? Just the channels and stuff.

Can't imagine without Internet. Hard to know the world. How I contact with my friends. Television is a great invention. It does good things for society to have this technology. Consequently, TV is a positive influence, on balance. It would therefore be bad if we didn't have it.

I still remember not having internet so it's not that far off, my school work was never online(although schools here have changed in the last year), and my social life isn't online except to talk to a few people now and then.
The only difficult bit for me would be lack of constant entertainment, lack of forums and not being able to google things at the blink of an eye.

This.
I wouldn't be able to Google reference pictures, I couldn't download games, I wouldn't be able to see new obscure game trailers...

It would be much harder to learn things for me, because for me, reading on the internet is better than reading from a book. Its also a place to study human behavior. Information is the only reliable currency.

TRIGGER WARNING: THIS TRIGGER WARNING CONTAINS TRIGGER WARNINGS!
Dear Tumblrites:Despite your wrongly self-diagnosedPTSD, no line ofscientific evidencesuggests people can be triggered over theinternet. Triggering works through thesenses(i.e. smell, taste, touch, vision, hearing.) but it goes throughreal time; if you're not experiencing it in real life as it'sACTUALLY HAPPENINGin yourACTUALlife, youCANNOTbe triggered. The only exception to this is if you have aseizure, but then again, that's triggered byepilepsy(i.e. rapidly-changing flashing lights)NOT PTSD. Remembering a bad incident is NOT the same thing as having aflashback. When you remember, youthink; when youflashback, youfeel.

The Reason I like the internet a little over books is that with the internet you can read something and get various perspectives on a particular topic from different people.
With a book you get to absorb a bit more information volumwise but you are stuck in both the authors and your own perspective.
