RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Poll: Do you think it's wrong for schools to brainwash students into wearing IDs around their neck(s)?
YES!! I think this is wrong and demeaning.
No, I don't think it's wrong. I'm sure they have a reason for this rule.

My school has this really dumb rule where you have to wear your ID around your neck because it's for your "safety." I think that's just wrong.

Do you agree?

Yes, I very much agree. That is a bullshit rule. Just don't do it, claim you "forgot" your I.D. or it melted in the washing machine or something.

I keep my ID in the bag all the time, and that's all. I've never put it on, and one time when we were checked, I waved my classmate's ID covering the pic with my thumb.

Problem, officer?

The new lanyards (for this year) have buckles, but I'm pretty sure that someone will be able to steal an ID easily if a lanyard has buckles.

People are so stupid they could probably get away with saying you need to keep a live bomb strapped to yourself at all times "for your safety"... and people would fall for it.

Re: My school has a really stupid rule. Do you agree with it?

Well here is my personal experience. In my High School, IDs were issued but only so you could sign out textbooks and what not(they came with bar codes and stuff) from the library, even then, you could get away with just telling them your ID number and they would let you sign out books. Aside from that, IDs were virtually meaningless, had no purpose at all, you didn't have to wear them or display them at all(in fact, they didn't have lanyards so you couldn't wear them even if you wanted to). That is how it was for Grades 10-11. Starting in Grade 12 however, the school did a total reversal and became completely militant. They issued lanyards, and demanded that school IDs be worn in hallways and when entering class. On the back of the IDs were schedules for each students, so teachers could verify where you were supposed to be.

If you were caught without an ID, for the first couple of weeks, they would simply make you sign into a sheet in the office for a temporary ID and after that, you would be sent home on repeated failures on carrying your ID unless you forked up 5$ for a brand new ID. Teachers were instructed to send students to the office if they didn't have IDs when entering their class. So basically, if you forgot your ID but decided anyways to go to class, you still get sent home(seems antithetical to that whole preventing skipping thing.). It was rigidly enforced for the first couple of months by teachers everywhere but ultimately, it was relaxed. You still had to have them, and could be sent home but teachers stopped checking them in class. I mean, if you bothered to show up in class, chances are you want to be there, ID or not.

The stated reason for this was 'safety', and to identify 'intruders', but we all knew this to be false. It was more about control, and catching skippers but what it really ended up doing was being obstructive to the 'good' students. Hell, even one of my teachers(Social), who read Gatto's work when he was in University and almost considered getting out of his teaching degree as a result(but decided to go through with it) , admitted as much. He noted that like most things it was about controlling us, and testing out obedience by levying petty commands and inconveniences on us.

In a nutshell though, is it stupid? If you are a student sure. However, if you have any understanding of how schools work and what they conspire to achieve, then not at all. Then it is quite understandable. It fits right into their philosophy, to produce automata. Don't get me wrong, I loathed ID cards but I wouldn't expect anything less from schools.

Dear Tumblrites: Despite your wrongly self-diagnosed PTSD, no line of scientific evidence suggests people can be triggered over the internet. Triggering works through the senses (i.e. smell, taste, touch, vision, hearing.) but it goes through real time; if you're not experiencing it in real life as it's ACTUALLY HAPPENING in your ACTUAL life, you CANNOT be triggered. The only exception to this is if you have a seizure, but then again, that's triggered by epilepsy (i.e. rapidly-changing flashing lights) NOT PTSD. Remembering a bad incident is NOT the same thing as having a flashback. When you remember, you think; when you flashback, you feel.

Re: My school has a really stupid rule. Do you agree with it?

Your supposed to have your I.D. visible at all times on your person when on campus but I don't no a single fucking person who actually follows that rule. I rarely even have mine with me at all much less display it. I usally end up buying a new one (I must have like 5 or 6 lying around the house) when I absolutely MUST have it for something like checking out textbooks. Your supposed to use it for:

Lunch: I have no Idea why and I don't ever see anyone use it for that purpose. It's just written in the planner thing they give us which I never use for anything but hall passes.

Hall Passes: You need your I.D. and planner to get a hall pass, Enforcement on this varies widely but most teachers don't really give a damn. As long as you have a planner its alright because thats where you sign for the hall pass. Lots of people just borrow other peoples planners though

Library: This is the only one they are extremely strict on. I'm not sure why. I think its mostly because the librarian is a stuck up bitch but it's easy enough to bypass. I go to the library alot during class time with my friends to fuck around on the internet and play quake 3. When you go in you have to show them your planner with the pass signed and dated (They actually look at that one) but the I.D. thankfully is the easy part. Usually one of us will have an I.D. and when one person flashes his I.D. you pass it off to the other person under the counter so it's like you both have your I.D. and if all eles fails you can always just swipe someone else's I.D. before you leave the classroom. I have I.D,'s for like 3 other people. Giggle

Re: My school has a really stupid rule. Do you agree with it?

I've always had to wear an ID, since I left elementary school, and have always found the policy to be silly. They claim that it's for our protection, to identify who was supposed to be in the building and who was not, but they never really followed up on checking out the people without IDs. They simply wrote detentions for people without them.

(Does anyone else find that contradictory? If someone "bad" walked into the building, and actually recieved a detention, they wouldn't serve it anyway. Duh. And the school wouldn't have any way to follow up, because they're not enrolled. Duh. And they'd do whatever they came into the building to do anyway. Duh. Despite the pink slip in their hand. So in the end it punishes honest students who are having a bad day or an organization crisis, or a fashion interest.)

The result was that people started to report the deans interest in ID's as a weather report for the day. "Yeah, avoid Mr. So and so because he's writing detentions like MAD." And then, becaue kids were running from deans as fast as the hallway traffic could carry them, they were reluctant to speak to them about honest issues, which hurt everybody. Not to mention, simple ID infractions got ramped up into big ones - a simple stop for an ID would, of course, make the student mad, and then the dean would get testy, and they'd end up shouting, and the kid would get suspended. It sucked.

And really, the honest truth was, nobody wore them anyway. There were so many ID violaters that they simply couldn't catch them all - and even if they did, the budget insured that there was no money for the people needed to supervise after school detention. SO, last year, the school cut its losses, hung its head in shame, and declared that ID's didn't need to be worn or visible. They just had to be on your person. Nobody enforced it, and it turned ID's from a safety thing into a tool, that actually benefitted students.

It made getting through the lunchlines quicker, checking out a library book easier, and best of all, signing out for the day was as easy as scanning your ID at the attendance office. (Now, since it was scanned, it went right into the computer as an authorized sign out, and, unless you had your attendance being watched or something, it would excuse your absenses. It was easy to get caught though, so... not many people tried it very often.)

Also, people stopped getting strangled/whipped/choked in the hallway too, during fights, or, more commonly, when their ID's accidently got attatched to someone elses backpack. (As you can imagine, it was loads of fun to be dragged by the neck until your caught the backpack owners attention.)

So, our ID policy is da 1337 now. No qualms. Just so long as they don't put it back to the way it was.

I don't see how wearing an ID is wrong or demeaning.

If you guys really hate wearing an ID, you probably shouldn't get a job. There are many jobs that require you to wear some sort of identification.

I don't think it's a big deal. My mom has to wear an ID at work (she works in a hospital) so idk.. i just don't find it that bad. And it's not like they force you to wear it outside of school.

Posted something similar a little while ago in the school venting section. While I think its dumb as well, others made a point that you're going to be wearing your identification at work anyways.
