RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017
The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.
If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.
To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.
I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.
I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.
I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.
I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.
Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.
Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

Re: Tests, standarized tests
I don't know why they don't just lie on the test scores, they do about everything else anyway.
Actually, they probably do. They probably bump everyones score up anyway, it's just half of us just write random shit on the tests which really fucks 'em over.

I wouldn't be surprised.
I heard that chinese test scores are done on a certain way and even intelligent people have a hard time with them.

Re: Tests, standarized tests
Its hard to explain(had an asian friend in high school for a while).
The tests aren't all really bought intelligence.
There are lots of tricks and ways people can pass them but these tests can also screw over people who study material and the overall intelligent.
Trying to explain but this was from high school.

Re: Tests, standarized tests
Oh I see. So like, they have hints and tricks for people to be able to get higher test scores, but if you are genuinely intelligent and study or whatever it can screw you over sometimes.

Yes intelligent people who are have the misfortune to believe in the tests often suffer but those who know how the tests work can easily out pass them to put it bare bones.

Re: Tests, standarized tests
Does anyone remember that Chinese article Gaiyara posted about half a year back? The one about Chinese people taking the tests naked? Man, that was hilarious. Must have been horrible for the guys.

Re: Tests, standarized tests
Had a friend from hong kong that said exactly the same thing, that you need test taking skills and being good at the subject isn't enough.

Re: Tests, standarized tests
It's just a very exaggerated version of Western's society examinations. Being good at the subject will only get you so far, but if you know how the test works you can get 75% without knowing the subject matter.

Its all a way to profit.

And think about all the money people spend on prep classes, tutors, prep books/tools, etc. They are just ways to take advantage of parents and students that have a need to have their/their childrens validness in society conformed by a piece of paper with percentiles.

Re: Tests, standarized tests
I was reading this book about the SAT once and one thing I remember is said is that the answer will NEVER be something that challenges mainstream american culture, so if there's a choice that says, "supreme court justices are evil poo-poo heads" you can just eliminate that one without even reading the question.
Another thing to look out for is two answer choices that say the exact opposite of each other. If it's just a "which of these is true" question, then you know it's one of those two.
I remember reading in a book by John Holt that tests suck as a way of finding out what someone knows about a subject. Any test will ask such a small sample of what there is to know. I think the example he gave was USA history. He'd never studied it, but if asked, he could probably write several pages on everything he knew about it, just because he's been around and heard things.
Life is good. Jeta është e mirë.
Die lewe is goed.
Het leven is goed.
Zoidberg: What is it, already? What's the cause of your anger?
Leela: I guess I would have to say, I hate you!
