RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

grades got me grounded

i am really mad at adults right now. what gives them the right to tell us what to do? they are bigger? no. adults are the same they just look bigger so we and adults are actually equal. anyway, my dad asked me "jose when do you wanna celebrate your birthday?" i told him i wanted to invite my friends next Saturday (my birthday is actually monday) then i asked him when im gonna get the guitar they told me i would get. monday or saturday? then he looked at my grades and i got mad.

he said that until i bring my grades up, im not gonna go outside the house to see my friends or anything unless im going to school so its basically like house arrest. you know how long it takes to bring grades up? weeks. sometimes even a month. at first i was "fuck you im not your dog i will go see my friend whenever i want." but then i remembered that he also said he would not celebrate my birthday until my grades went up. this was a few days ago.

i was planning on going to the movies then do what ever the fuck i want but i really want that guitar and i dont have enough money to buy it and i cant earn money because of ageist laws. what i hate the most about most parents today is that they try to get to know you and be your friend but when they know you, they use what they know as a weapon. it makes me rage. i wish i never told my dad everything about me. half of the things he knew about me he used against me. he knows school makes me depressed and he knows that its turning kids into sheep. but he supports all the bad things school does and he knows what its really doing.

please give me some advice i don't know if i should disobey him and just go outside with my best friend or stay inside for weeks. here is what might happen if i disobey him him:

good things:
i can show him that i am not a dog
i can be free before i get home
i can be human for 2 to 4 hours

bad things:
i might get beaten
i might not get a guitar
i might nit have a birthday

my parents cant send me to bootcamp because they can't afford it

if i obey him:

good things:
i get the guitar
i have a birthday
i don't get beaten

bad things:
i have to be alone for weeks
i have no one to talk to
i wont be free
it will show my dad that he can control me

so what should i do? i really need help.

democracy died when compulsory schooling was born.

Re: grades got me grounded

You really need to decide for yourself.
But if I was in this situation, I would do this:
*Wear padding under clothes to reduce pain of possible beating
*Boycott your father. Stay as far away from him as possible
*Go on a hunger strike, or some sort of other strike.

Re: grades got me grounded

I insist everyone who's part of the anti-school movement gets their grades as high as possible.

Not (just) because of things like this, but because it gives them less reasons to assume we hate school.

Pretty sure you can get some sort of legal support on your side then.

Corporal punishment. He/She doesn't have a chance if there aren't any bruises. And I mean, a lot bruises that are obviously physical abuse.
