RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

I need information regarding a GED.

I currently go to an alternative school, where I achieve credits at a faster pace than most normal public schools. However, since I am a junior with 7 credits (22 are needed to graduate) I will be a "super-senior." This is not okay with me, to say the least.
In my state (Washington) I am eligible to test to receive a GED. I was wondering if anyone here has taken the tests, if they passed the first time, what parts were hard, and how difficult the math portion was for them? Any other relevant and helpful information would be much appreciated, as well.
***I took a math GED practice test and got a 68%, which is awful but fills me with hope, considering that you need 30-40% to pass the math portion of the test.

Re: I need information regarding a GED.

Please don't tell me to just drop out either. I would, but the person I would like to apprentice under refuses to allow me to apprentice unless I am in school or graduated. My apprenticeship is top priority for me right now, so I believe a GED is my best option.

Re: I need information regarding a GED.

I got a GED and found the tests to be extremely easy. Passed on the first attempt.

The math was all pretty basic. Geometry and algebra, mostly. They gave all of the formulas and things like that in the back of the math booklet. A calculator is provided, but you can't use it for the entire test.

Also, I had to be out of school for a year before they would let me sign up to take the test. Silly Minnesota laws. Rolleyes

Why the fuck would they give you a calculator if you can't even use it?

You can use it, but only for about half of the math portion.

Can you drink water/eat during the exam? How long do you get? About how many questions? Were you about to die from the anxiety? I've looked up information, but first-hand information is always more helpful.

From my experience, in Georgia:

You get breaks between portions of the exam, spanning from the time you get done to the next part of the test. You still get thirty minutes if you take the full time though. Between portions, you're free to eat and drink.

It's in the range of 20 questions for reading, and 40-60 for Science and History. You get 70 minutes for the written essay. Math had 30 questions.

I had no anxiety because I spent two months prior getting prepared for it. 'Course, the center where I took it had classes you could take and they helped analyze your weaknesses and bolster them prior. Because of that, my strongest subject ended up being my lowest grade.

EDIT- Oh god damn me and not checking post dates.

afaik, you have to actually drop out before you can take the proper GED test...
