RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

I got this question WRONG?

In Science, I took a test on population. They asked "What would you do if the wolf population was too high for the deer population."

I said "Nothing, it's not our place to play God. Nature will fix itself naturally, and if not, then natural selection will take place. By controlling population, we're stopping natural selection almost completely."

I got it wrong. Because I had a different opinion, I got it fucking wrong. RAGE

(On a side note, I accidentally'd my Firefox. I was bored and wanted to see what would happen if I got rid of all the toolbars, and now I can't get them back. Uhoh )

Dude, the answer is to play a recording of a deer mating call in the middle of a minefield and finish off the survivors with a minigun. Don't they teach you anything in that school?

Re: I got this question WRONG?

What sort of answer would have been acceptable?

If I were the teacher, I'd probably have accepted the answer, but I don't think it's a particularly good one. For one, natural selection takes place regardless. Some of the animals won't live to reproduce, some of those who do will reproduce more than others. The offspring of those animals that do reproduce will inherit the traits of their parents. This is natural selection. As for playing God, keep in mind that human activity already affects other animals regardless of whether we do it intentionally. That said, neither wolves or deer are endangered, and the population levels will, in all likelihood, eventually level out by themselves.

lol how did u do that lol
maybe you should delete the config file... I dunno lol
Reinstall? That probably won't work. Can you get to firefox properly on another account?
Go into Run (start->run or just type run if you have viztaz, which I'm pretty sure you do) and type firefox -safe-mode. That should do it, after you choose what to reset.

Re: I got this question WRONG?

I didn't say that it would completely stop it, but it seems like letting a species play with cheat codes. Even if that species shouldn't make it otherwise, we'd be keeping them alive. Plus, we could make it that a useful adaptation never takes place, because we're letting them play with OMFG HAXX, so it'll be harder for them to evolve as a species. Say the deer population decreases dramatically, the wolves would have no other choice but to learn how to live with less food. The ones who could survive on less, or blend in more, or run faster, or any of those traits, would survive, and pass on the genes. But if we kill them at random, we could be killing the ones with the good genes, (And the only thing to help them there is the blending trait, so I guess that could still evolve) and the bad genes could continue to reproduce. Same with killing the deer (though this makes more sense, since we can actually eat deer).

I mean, I'm no expert in Biology, so if there's a flaw somewhere in there, feel free to point it out.

Not technically. As we both found separate answers at the same time.

Actually, you're answer would be correct so long as the question didn't involve 'because humans have been doing such and such'.

Yeah, that's why I said if I were the teacher I'd likely have accepted it.

Still, stuff like "it'll be harder for them to evolve" is sort of missing the point. Natural selection tends to increase the frequency of traits that give a reproductive advantage in a particular environment. If the food supply is unpredictable, the wolves will adapt to that over time. (If it were consistently low, the population would likely just stabilize at a lower level.) If people consistently hunted wolves, they might adapt to that too. Some traits would be selected for in either situation, some would only be selected for in one or the other. Point is, it only makes sense to say that good traits are selected for and bad traits are selected against if 'good' means 'giving a reproductive advantage in this environment' and 'bad' means the opposite.

And now I'm going to steal from Kirby because he's much more articulate than I am. =P

Re: I got this question WRONG?

Simple to answer and I don't know how could this be wrong, really. I mean, USA is basically teaching the children that messing with nature IS AWRIIIIIGHT. Yeah, sure thing but first find yourselves a new planet or show us one we may go to once everything goes extinct.
The true answer would be, that we should limit our own hunting for them, rather than wiping out another natural predator. Seriously, we don't even eat what we hunt these days, we don't need to hunt in the first place. (though if we didn't keep farm animals, we could go back to hunting and do nature a favor by being just a regular predator doing some natural selection. At least we wouldn't waste bullets and time on each other.)

Problem, officer?

I sort of see your point, though I still think it's disrupting things that ought not to be disrupted. Eventually, populations even themselves out.
