RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Hey.

Hi there school survival forum members Biggrin
I've been lurking around here for a month or so, but i just got an account, so I though I should introduce myself.

I'm 14, and a freshman in high school.
I came to school survival by searching something like "i hate school"
Anyways, I pretty much agree with everything on this website and i've printed off a bunch of articles and am currently passing them around with my friends.
I have a history of doing insanely well in school, i had a 98 average through middle school and a 96 average this year. My parents are insane about my grades. If i got so much as a B, they would freak, probably ground me, and take away my computer, so i have pretty much no options other than doing really well in school. Noo
My dad wants me to follow his career path to becoming a doctor, which I don't want to do. I want to do something different with my life.

Anyway, just thought i should introduce myself.

I am free, no matter what rules surround me. If I find them tolerable, I tolerate them; if I find them too obnoxious, I break them. I am free because I know that I alone am morally responsible for everything I do.

Re: Hey.

Welcome.
Grow a pair, and stop being their little bitch. It sure will take some grounding, and a few years of war but you need to let them know you don't want to take that path.
Since you're overachieving, you may have better luck asking them to let you get schooled online or anything similiar.

Problem, officer?

Re: Hey.

Ceiling Cat, you're probably right. They won't let me get schooled online, because they say I need to go to school to develop social skills. Suspicious
I've asked continually in the past. I'm gonna keep trying to get them to let me go. As for overacheiving, I don't study for tests and generally do everything pretty half-assed, yet I get good marks. That's my point of view though, I probably try way too hard. The only thing that I do that could be viewed as overachieving is that I actually do all my homework (usually copying off a friend).

And denied, I'm caucasian.

If you ask too often, they'll get used to it and say no every time without even thinking.

My parents let me take online classes when I refused to go to school anymore, but even though it worked I felt like a little kid throwing a tantrum. And it probably wouldn't work a lot of the time, so that's probably not really the best way to go about it.

I don't know your parents, so this may or may not work, but you should generally have everything planned out beforehand, up to possibly getting into college. (It's fine if you actually don't intend to go, but your parents will probably take it better if you at least could go.) I realize it doesn't seem to make any sense to make plans before you get permission, but it should make your parents more likely to agree. Depending on what your parents are like, you might also pretend like you're asking as a formality and that you already assume they're going to say yes. Then if they say no, they'll feel like assholes for refusing what you're presenting as a perfectly reasonable and uncontentious thing. On the other hand, depending on their personalities, they might get pissed at you for "disrespecting their authority" or something.

Also, online classes sort of suck unless your only problem with school is the people there.

Yeah, the people at my school aren't the problem (unless you mean teachers, etc.), I have lots of good friends there and stuff.

Re: Hey.

I don't really see anything wrong with getting good grades. It typically gets you more respect and if you ever do want to go to college or whatever it helps. I mean, if getting good grades gets in the way of other things you want to accomplish, then yes it is a problem. If you just naturally get good grades, I don't see a reason to start flunking on purpose. Besides, being anti-school and getting good grades at the same time will probably help out when trying to convince others of the downfalls of the education system.
