RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

Dreams about school

I keep having dreams about school. Quite frequently, about every second night. Even now, when I'm off. They're either nightmares about bad stuff that could happen at school, or repeats of stuff that has happened at school. I hate it. It's so goddamn annoying, not to mention I don't need to be reminded about all the shit that happens at school.

I know why I have these dreams, because my school life is shit and i have anxiety and depression because of it. That much is obvious to me.

Does anyone have any advice on how to stop these dreams? I've tried to get school out of my mind before I go to sleep, relaxation, etc, nothing works.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Also, does this happen to anyone else?
Please, I really need help here. School causes me enough stress and this isn't helping.

Re: Dreams about school

I use to be depressed from school. But now I just stopped caring, and ignore all the bad stuff. I think it's normal when you've been overfilled with hate and pain that you stop caring.

Anyway, I have some bad dreams about school. Usually my dreams are really weird, like being in a different world. Usually I have dreams where I'm at school running around naked. I have that dream a lot for some reason. I run around naked at school, and then everyone tries to chase me and the teachers end up catching me and drag me by the legs or hands to a prison while everyones laughing at me.

So no, you're fine. It's normal to have bad dreams about school. It must be on your mind a lot, but that's common for someone who hates school. I don't know how to stop those dreams, since I don't think you can even do that. But there's one thing you can do...

...have you ever heard of - "lucid dreaming"?

Re: Dreams about school

Hello, my old forum. Smile

I myself have school dreams on occasion, and when they do occur, they come to me about two or three nights in a row, always concerning different things.

Oddly, when it happens I dream that I am in high school, but it always takes place in my K-8 school building with the same teachers. Anyway...

I am sure that you are quite right about it being linked to stress and anxiety caused by school. Whenever I had a project coming up in, say, a month (clearly, I worry too much about those types of things), the dreams would come. It's normal and all that, but as you said: Annoying.

There is usually nothing to be done about having dreams that you do not want. Sometimes though, interrupted sleep which causes you to wake up every so often before falling back into the land of nod causes you to have more dreams than otherwise. If noises are distracting you, try earplugs. If you're sensitive to light, try (if you do not have them already) blinds/shades on the windows to block out street lamps and passing headlights.

Psychologically speaking, I've really no idea how to stop recurring dreams. Even when you are experiencing them the situation is difficult - sometimes even impossible - to control with . I suggest you continue using relaxation techniques, though. If you think there is a specific cause for the dreams (as in not just school, but a particular problem within school), remind yourself of the feeling you have a few days after you've done a presentation or assignment you were loathing, and how satisfied you were that it was over with...then how you probably won't even remember doing it in years to come. It's a way of tricking the mind into believing you're not stressed, I suppose.

Yup...that's all I've got. Hope something helps. Smile

Re: Dreams about school

I have horrible nightmares about school several times a year. It's not very often, but when it hppens, it stays with me for a very long time.
My nightmares usually turn out to be extremely violent. In the one I remember most, I was locked in a tight desk in a dark room, with a single lightbulb over my head. The small amout of light coming from that bulb showed many marks and blood spatters on the wall and on the desk. I could hear teachers screaming their lungs out and probably some kid sceams as well. Anyway, I remember slowly leaving deep nailmarks on the desk and I was shaking uncontrollably. That's all I remember.
I'm not sure what you can do to stop those dreams from happening. My only guess is using happy thoughts.

I usually have dreams about school just before the holidays finish. The dreams have a horrible atmosphere, a lot like school itself.

The dream world is a scary place.

Fucking this. I barely remembered what I dreamed... well, I was going down the stairs and these emo scene kids were going down jumping stupidly while holding their hands, I pushed one of them so that they stopped holding each other because they were going slower than I was and they got all pissed. I don't remember the other one...

Heh, I remember a dream I was on the bus going to school and some Aboriginal kid got on and naturally made a scene. He was insulting randoms, then he tried to insult me. I snapped at him saying "FUCK OFF YOU ABO CUNT" then the I woke up.

I've also had nightmares about school. The nightmares are usually where I am in a jail pod and i'm being harassed by the teachers while trying to get out of the pod. I usually end up outside and the school looks just like my school. Other nightmares are where i'm stuck at school for 2,200 days straight, which is the 6 years that I have left. Uhoh

Back in high school, I used to have a lot of nightmares about school. One frequent aspect of my dreams was that I would go to school naked, yeah.

I'd recommend that you browse Dreamcloud, a site which has a database on various dream meanings and symbols. Typically our dreams project our fears, anxieties, as well as hopes and plans for the future.

Here is their entry on school: https://www.dreamscloud.com/en/dream-dic...bol/school

My best advice is that you find a place to express yourself outside school. It could be somewhere simple like a park, a library, etc. A place where you can create joy.

EDIT: Just realized the OP hasn't been online since 2012 - but nonetheless I'll keep the post.

RE: Dreams about school

The only bad dream about school that I remember was that A block became so mouldy that any student who entered got an automatic C1. There were room changes. The only places in A block that had no mould were AF11 and the East side ground floor, but there were room changes as well. I was the only student who entered and didn't get caught, but I ran out immediately. I was in school early, so no one told me about it until assembly.

My other dreams about school are usually good.

Thank goodness this one was just a dream.

Oh wait, I also had one when I turned evil on my first day in Year 10. I was flirting with my math teacher, sleeping in English class, refusing to work in History, telling people about my plan on selling Aleem (My sister's naughty classmate), stealing someone else's ceramic work and coming into science with a headscarf to pretend to be someone else and avoid getting sent home early for the other things I did.

By the way, I'm not in Year 10 yet, but I will be next year.
