RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

HAHAHAHA NO

I just got some bull from the district high school a few days ago and look what they sent me:

Quote:Welcome to Advanced English One! To be in an advanced course, you are required to complete a short reading assignment over the summer and bring an essay with you on the first full day of class (September 8th). There will also be a short comprehension test over the reading on the first day. The assignments are explained below.

READING ASSIGNMENT:
Read a short story about the the Greek Hero, Theseus.

ESSAY ASSIGNMENT:
In a well structured, five paragraph essay, explain three ways that Theseus is a hero.

Your essay should be typed, double spaced, in 12 point font. Please pay particular attention to correct grammar and spelling. Make sure to demonstrate your understanding of the five paragraph essay format by including an introduction with a thesis, three body paragraphs with supporting details, and a conclusion with a restated thesis.

COMPREHENSION TEST:
On the first full day of school (September 8th) in your Advanced English One class you will take a short comprehension test over the summer reading. This test will measure your ability to understand basic literature elements, themes, and vocabulary.

What. The. Fuck. Good thing there's a chance that I'm not going to that school next year because this is just plain stupid. A huge ass reading assignment and a test on the first day? I don't even understand why they would even bother, because what kid does homework over the summer?

Yeah, fuck them. School is evil enough. It needs to butt the fuck out of your personal time.

Re: HAHAHAHA NO

That sounds so fucking boring. I thought greek gods were pretty fucking awesome until we started reading shit about them in english. You read the story and then you break down how he was a hero, analyze the different ways the author used some obscure poetic element that nobody gives a shit about. It RUINS literature. Why the fuck cant I just read a book? Why do I have to painfully break it apart to better understand it when I already fucking understand it. Even just writing an essay on what the book was about would be better than that rubbish.
Or *Gasp* being able to choose your own book! There was this book we had to read for english honors. Some cheap ass story called "things fall apart" by some crackpot author from africa. It was about some shitty third world village in africa. Thats about all I got from it because I only read the first 4 pages before I got fed up with it and just didn't read it.
We had assignments in our work book each day that you were supposed to do as you read the book. It assumed you read a chapter every 2 days or something like that and gave you assignments that correlated with the book. I just wrote down some guesses or copied someone else apparently the guy kills himself at the end but the point is I didn't even read the book and I still got an A. What dose that say about this shitty system. I mean sure I copied work sometimes but I still aced the final essay. All of this is just so fucking pointless....!

Re: HAHAHAHA NO

Oh man I hate when you have to study a book over and over and over. The book is bad enough, But lets BEAT IT TO DEATH. Oh my god why do we need to analyze every fucking chapter. And when were reading in class stop every 2 minutes to discuss "the meaning" of what the character just said. And by the end of the book explore several deep meanings of it. Maybe there is no meaning for once. Maybe some guy wrote the story to be entertaining not a fucking life changing lesson!

Re: HAHAHAHA NO

I had to read two books over the summer: Pride & Prejudice and Their Eyes Were Watching God. I now hate those two books. I might have liked P&P if I didn't have to read it and do the assignment. We had to make note cards so we could study them for the AP Exam. I probably wrote over a hundred note cards in all, as detailed as I could make them, and used some web resources to help, but I still failed by several points. I hated that class. I should've just taken a regular college prep lit class. I might would have been bored, but at least I wouldn't have been in mental anguish.

Re: HAHAHAHA NO

Pride & Prejudice is pretty good. You should read pride prejudice and zombies. It's a pretty good book. Might help get that sour taste out of your mouth that the class left.

I read alot, And I could not finish the pride prejudice and zombies. It was just so boring. I can only imagine how horribly boring that book would be without zombies.

This. I just not a heavy reader, I love light reading, but even with an epic Lexile, I still have to read Pride and Prejudice five times before I get it. I just can't pay attention to anything for too long.

lol. They gave us tests in 6th and 7th grade to guage our reading comprehension level or whatever. Who cares. Doing well on their tests is irrelevant.

I don't care. I have no pride in my scores. My classmates who were 4 "grade levels" behind in math and reading aren't to blame themselves. School is retarded. A few people are lucky not to be permanently damaged by it.

I'm not proud of my scores. I don't give a fuck about my scores. I'm proud of my ability to read. Scores put aside I can still read better than they can.

Better than your classmates? Like I said, I don't think they are to blame for it themselves. They are victims of schooling.
