RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

If you want to write about your experiences in school, you can write on our blog.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. My contact details are here.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

Re: Non-Worker and No GED yet. Any money making tips?

I don't think you can afford to be picky about any job opportunities at this point. Just get some experience under your belt...

Work on a farm or do odd jobs like mowing peoples lawns... Volunteer somewhere to get something on your resume if you are living with someone else and don't need a job to support yourself. Grocery stores and fast-food places wouldn't be horrible for a temporary job considering their payment in comparison to some of the shittier labor jobs. Just try to get some credit history, a job history and financial background.

I don't think you can get to many jobs without your GED... Even if they are just jobs at restaurants and grocery stores.

Good luck.

Well that's a bummer, considering I'm antisocial and I really don't
like being near people at public places, which is why I was hoping there was something easy I can do online.

*sighs* Guess I'll just sit here and wait for a miracle to happen. Noo

Yeah, I'm pretty much in the same boat. I'm still in high school, but getting a job is going to be a pain in the ass.

Perhaps you could start a website or something and get add revenue? Depends on your skills... Maybe you could write a blog every day, and put adds on there. I'm not sure.

I'm probably screwed either way, since delusional Dad decided to close my Bank account, so I can't think of any other ways of receiving payment through the net.

Well, you're 20, so you can get your own bank account that he has no access to, rite?

Also, look into writing jobs. I don't think they pay a whole lot unless you write really well, but it's something.

I know of 2 sites that deal with that sort of thing... but TBH I don't know jack about how being a writer actually works. I've ordered a few articles on the first one though.
http://thecontentauthority.com/
http://www.textbroker.com/

Aaaand then you could always start your own site and do the Adsense thing on it, but that takes time to get any sort of results.

Re: Non-Worker and No GED yet. Any money making tips?

If you have or can build up skills with things like building web sites, programming, graphic design, writing, and so on, it's possible to find gigs. Sometimes just finding a random physical labor job works too. Even if you aren't into things like that, they really aren't the end of the world if you keep developing other skills and interests.

You can definitely set up your own bank account if you are 20. You might be depending on your parents for room and board, but you're still considered an adult now by the world at large.

You might look into online gigs like chacha.com or kgb.com where you get paid a few cents per question you look up online for people who send in text message questions. You can't get rich, but it's possible to make minimum wage on your own time.

A similar type of work is available at Amazon's mturk.com, which is a marketplace for simple tasks you can do online that also typically pay a few cents each, but it can add up.

Also put some effort into figuring out what you might be good at, or what you could learn in general. Do you have any general life goals, or things you could spend time learning?

I'm sorry to be the one to have to tell you this, but unless you get out of your vicious cycle and get a life, you will be in the same situation in 10 years time.

Yes, society is messed up, but there's no shortcut to making money and you do need to get at least a little social to survive in this world. I used to have a lot of social phobia and it will destroy you if you let it.

Get out of your house and get a job. Don't do it because it's the only way of making money, do it because it will give you social skills and confidence. That's what you lack, so you need to go get it.

Your parents closed your bank account? Grow some balls and open your own account that your parents can't acceess. You're 20, you shouldn't be letting others control your life. Get the hell out of your house and get a life right now. Start with a job, start exercising, and get an education too. It is now or never.

Well said, psychopath. It definitely pays to get out there and push your limits... it's great if you can find work online, but try to get out and interact with the world as well.

Fucking capitalism. It's hard as hell to get a job, especially these days. I'm in the same boat, OP. I guess I'll just apply where I can, pick up the job classifieds, and see where I can go from there.

AHAHAHHAA blame capitalism. If you haven't noticed, OP said he was antisocial so didn't want anything that including social interactions, that means he hasn't even tried getting a job. Even in communism, you have to interact with people.

"Even in communism"? In communism, I imagine social interaction would be rather important considering the precursor is socialism. It is an ideology about people after all. What I was referring to is that in a socialist economy it would be easier to get a job because workplaces would be owned, controlled and managed by the workers in a democratic manner, rather than a single business owner calling all the shots in an authoritarian or even fascist manner. What I mean by this is that workers will want more people in the workplace to help with the work, rather than a boss wanting less workers and putting more workload on the workers present in order to increase profits. This is just one way socialism creates jobs.

But, I digress. This thread is about what the OP can do right now in order to get a job, and not politics.

Because if you don't take control of your life, you've just traded out school for parents/thecycleoflaziness as your new ruler. What do you want to do? Go out and learn it, do it. Even if you don't succeed, you've done SOMETHING.
Go do anything. Apply for a job anywhere they don't require GEDs/Diplomas. Don't be picky- you don't have to keep it forever, or decide a fucking career right now, just get a job, get the life experience. Don't be afraid to meet people- but if you really are that afraid/anxious about it, start out slow.

Go out and live life! You don't have school ruling over you 8 hours a day, go enjoy your freedom and find out what the world has to offer beyond awesome games and the internet.

Carla Franklin may be a whore. She may be a wonderful, kind, moral woman. Seeing as I don't know her personally, I cannot know for sure. However, I find her actions (suing Google, requesting the personal info of her critics, getting angry over random internet idiocy that she should ignore and be bigger than, trying to get this site in trouble because of a few users' commentary on the situation, etc.) pretty ridiculous and unwarranted. If she didn't want people to to be talking about/judging her, well 1. that's impossible, she's a human, and 2. she shouldn't have been a model or agreed to be on film. AND 3. she DEFINITELY shouldn't have sued Google and made all this fuss over a few random idiots whom she probably won't ever know expressing their opinion. Mmkay? MMKAY.

Actually it isn't capitalism that's a problem, it's society as a whole that makes it harder for one to find a suitable job.

There are quite a few entry-level jobs available, though your antisocial identification can make many of them "unsatisfactory" for you. It seems like many jobs for "beginners" involves interaction with consumers, or manual labor. Even in these two basic job categories there are those who seek a GED/High School Diploma.

Maybe you can build up your "network", gain some experience, and once you get enough funds, start your own business(or make small investments). You'll be starting at the bottom rung of the ladder, and will be competing with everyone else, so a lot more effort is required at this stage.

Capitalism, the problem? Hah, the people of 2010 are too stupid to realize the SOLUTION is capitalism. As opposed to the corporatist/socialist kind of thing we ACTUALLY have.

You do realize a corporatocracy takes advantage of a nation's capitalist system, which has basically happened to the US. Socialist plans are put in place to appease the populace, and keep them blind from the obvious and harmful corruption of capitalism going on.

Capitalism is inherently laissez-faire. The corporations AREN'T SUPPOSED TO BE IN GOOD WITH THE GOVERNMENT. We're not supposed to have this level of government intervention, they're not supposed to be screwing over the small businesses, and, quite frankly, taxes are theft and prevent economic stimulation.

We don't live in a capitalist society. We live in a corporatist society that is beginning a transition phase with socialism, and that is the exact opposite of what we need right now.
