RIP School Survival Forums
August 2001 - June 2017

The School Survival Forums are permanently retired. If you need help with quitting school, unsupportive parents or anything else, there is a list of resources on the Help Page.

To everyone who joined these forums at some point, and got discouraged by the negativity and left after a while (or even got literally scared off): I'm sorry.

I wasn't good enough at encouraging people to be kinder, and removing people who refuse to be kind. Encouraging people is hard, and removing people creates conflict, and I hate conflict... so that's why I wasn't better at it.

I was a very, very sensitive teen. The atmosphere of this forum as it is now, if it had existed in 1996, would probably have upset me far more than it would have helped.

I can handle quite a lot of negativity and even abuse now, but that isn't the point. I want to help people. I want to help the people who need it the most, and I want to help people like the 1996 version of me.

I'm still figuring out the best way to do that, but as it is now, these forums are doing more harm than good, and I can't keep running them.

Thank you to the few people who have tried to understand my point of view so far. I really, really appreciate you guys. You are beautiful people.

Everyone else: If after everything I've said so far, you still don't understand my motivations, I think it's unlikely that you will. We're just too different. Maybe someday in the future it might make sense, but until then, there's no point in arguing about it. I don't have the time or the energy for arguing anymore. I will focus my time and energy on people who support me, and those who need help.

-SoulRiser

The forums are mostly read-only and are in a maintenance/testing phase, before being permanently archived. Please use this time to get the contact details of people you'd like to keep in touch with. Send me a message if you'd like to keep in touch with me & Steve.

Please do not make a mirror copy of the forums in their current state - things will still change, and some people have requested to be able to edit or delete some of their personal info.

This one kid was kidnapped and abused for truancy

https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle...experience

My reaction is that I'm shocked, sickened, horrified, and enraged. How could anyone do this? They said in that article that some of the kids were sent there for being suicidal. I think that it's a really bad idea to send a suicidal person to boot camp. And being sent to boot camp for wanting to do something with your life? The US is a third world country. What do you think about this sickening event?

I thought child abuse and kidnapping was illegal.

Comparing students by their personality is like comparing a blanket to the sun, in terms of which one produces more light. Comparing students is just an excuse to exploit their weaknesses.

I just read that story.

It sounds very made up.

Does anybody need this broken down or do we pretty much agree this story is horseshit?

This one kid was kidnapped and abused for truancy

I find it amusing that they tried portraying the mother as some "legendary figure who made sacrifices to help someone she loved~"

Quote:I was distraught. There is nothing wrong with hairdressing, but I wanted her to get a proper education first, so she would have choices.
Her mom doesn't realize that the most important things for someone to learn are what interests them, and them only. She's forcing her ways up her daughter's ass, ignoring that she must've thought long and fucking hard to choose dropping out, and ignoring that she had a fucking passion that'll probably get crushed being postponed and replaced with draining busy-work. Why do parents always make decisions for their kids, never consulting their kids, as if they know them better than they do?

Why do parents keep trying to mold their kids into something they aren't?
Why the hell do parents keep trying to restrict their kids and then wonder why they are rebelling?
Why do parents never genuinely listen to their kids, but expect their kids to listen to AND obey them without question?
Why do parents expect respect that they do not return?
Why do parents see punishment as a valid form of "discipline" when people listen and learn best when shown compassion and understanding, not through fear and guilt.
Why do parents not see their kids as people?

Quote:She finished high school with straight As, went to college, then did a master’s. She works in the legal system now. Both my kids joke that I’m a psycho mom, but they forgave me and we remain close. It’s the most difficult thing I’ve ever done. Could they have got where they are today without such drastic action? Perhaps, but it wasn’t a chance I was willing to take. I believe the more we suffer in life, the more we grow. I have two strong, amazing kids, and I’d do it again.
-Defining success by the typical definition(what others deem successful instead of what the individual deems successful).
-That place likely used a lot of coercion and some brainwashing. I doubt she just happily "realized" that school is "good" place.
-This seems like a classic case of someone going through an inherently abusive experience which happens to result in something positive, then seeing the experience as good. Kinda like how people who were spanked sometimes grow up to think spanking is good because they "turned out well".
-Her saying she'd do it again because her daughters turned out well reminds me of people who say kids should suffer through bullying because it'll "build their character", failing to realize that love, respect, and acceptance are hella fucking better and less psychologically damaging ways to raise a confident, happy human DAMN IT!

i think 100% of that story is made up.

there are way too many missing details for one thing

This one kid was kidnapped and abused for truancy

One of my main thoughts was "what the fuck. Why can't this person become a hairdresser? Just because you can't handle someone who can think for herself". Do you know what boot camp does to people? It makes them feel even worse, sometimes driving them to suicide or mental illness. Kidnapping kids in the middle of the night is extremely traumatizing and almost always results in PTSD.

agreed, and i didn't read beyond the headline.

"Experience: I paid to have my daughter kidnapped "

this whole "look i did something shocking pls give me attention" is at the very least highly exaggerated.

its what I say about plausibility. this violates too many well established models of human psychology and has too many missing details to be taken seriously.

what is the name of that school in Utah again? why was this not more of an advertisement for that school? what does the daughter do in the "legal system" again?
